Which colour looks best?

Post by MarkHawkins » Wed Jan 17, 2018 1:19 pm

We are trying to finalise colour choice on HBL (currently with Speedy). The car was originally a light metallic blue but has had several repaints since then and most photographic records on the web and in magazines show it in green. It's also seen in the Don Pither book but in a black and white photo.

I currently favour the Fords colour

Switching back to blue is another option but that would make the car less identifiable with it's long recorded history

My 5a was a very similar colour - Vauxhall Silver Green Metallic from memory
Image
(Picture of the Vauxhall colour as I can't find one of my 5a).

I can't remember the colour Matt G's 5a is from memory but that's very similar - a VW colour?

If you change the colour completely eg green to blue you will have to send you reg doc away to be modified. Our Coupe is gold - a horrible yellow gold originally but I am going to do it platinum gold which is more silver than gold but I don't have to have the reg doc amended.

Ford colour looks good.

On the one hand, colours tend to look lighter on the car and with time. on the other, the darker the colour the more it will highlight any body flaws

I could have sworn it’s in the forebears book in colour??

IIRC didn’t Terry Cox match it for a wing repair?

Were there different editions of the book? I don't recollect seeing that picture.

Certainly 2 print runs - pictures are better quality in the first batch.

Is that in the Forebears book or the Reliant Sportscars book, JC?

Stick with the original colour or as close as you can get to it, looks quite cool.

I had thought perhaps they might have included colour in the second edition, but then I looked in mine, which is a first edition, and there's the picture (Page xii, which comes between pages 61 and 62). So in fact, maybe they left colour out of the second edition (or changed some of the photos). I think there were a few updates in the second edition, it wasn't just a straight copy of the first?

The first edition only had a little note about the Scimitar Sabre, IIRC - second edition included it up to the end I think? I don't actually own a copy - only the Reliant Sportscars book.

It's still the same car if you paint it another colour. I don't think it lessens the value of its history to be different to how it appeared previously.
I do love originality... Any pictures of what colour it left the factory in?

I disagree - all of its racing history is in green. Yes paint it blue if you’re going for a rebuild in full “as original condition” or a.n. other colour if you’re not bothered about originality or history.
