Ours is the same apart from the handbrake end - two sheet metal bars and no turn buckle. How much side to side movement is there on the red levers that act on the brake shoe in the drum?

that last picture is the type of cylinder i thought you may have. now look at the backing plate for wear marks from the two side pins of the lever. any wear there will have to be sorted [built up] the cylinder is the other part that can wear so look there also.

So in short, we should concentrate our efforts on what is going on in the drums before changing the ling to the pulley to a turn buckle or modifying the hand brake attachment point?

Moving the attachment point will give more leverage and make it easier to apply - but won't necessarily make it better.

From memory there is very little side to side movement on the red lever.
In fact, when I rebuilt the handbrake everything was so tight I was surprised it worked - and quite well too.
I may have been lucky ...

There is side to side play in the lever going through the brake backing plate. I know I can get hold of new cylinders and fitting kits but what about the levers themselves?
With the drums removed, I confirmed the levers started off the same distance from the backing plates then pulled the lever up to the top of it's travel and the levers both moved the same amount (0.5 inches). I could feel some resistance on the handbrake lever with the ends connected but not with them disconnected. If I pull on one end of the hand brake it pulls through to the other side so I don't think it is binding. The rear brakes when operated on the pedal worked well on test and if I assist the setting of the handbrake by pushing the pedal as I set it, it becomes firmly applied but the MoT test for the single line system is on moving rollers with the parking brake being progressively applied.

if you have the drums off then look at the shoes where the h,brake lever lifts the shoe, the shoe itself can be worn there, the tell tale is a little burr or ridge on the shoe at the contact point. side play is not what you want as your pull effort can be lost in pulling the lever in the wrong direction

There didn't appear to be wear in the shoe. So is eliminating play down to the wheel cylinder / lever combination or does the back plate come into this also?

Speaking to Mike Thompson, he has suggested that wear on the back plate is the most likely culprit.

After stripping down and cleaning we see there is indeed wear in the back plates. A small shiny indentation where the lugs of the levers sit against it. Should this be entirely flat? How best to address this? - we have welding and grinding equipment.

i would weld the indents up and grind back to flat.
look at the two pins [that have caused the indents] these may have flat spots or be oval,

Indents have been filled and flatted. The pins had very slight flat spots. New wheel cylinders fitted and the rest should go back together tomorrow.

I had the brakes reassembled by 10:00 this morning and was just about to plumb in the hydraulics (the old copper pipes and fittings hadn't survived dismantling) with a couple of new pipes when I realised the short flexi pipe to drivers side wheel cylinder had two male ends rather than one male one female .. so close.
