Coupe Tyre Size

Post by Brucky » Fri Jul 06, 2018 9:42 am

Can anybody please advise on the correct tyre size for a 1967 Coupe please. She currently sits on Wolfrace 195/70/14 with spacers. I am not mad on them. They are catching on the front wheel arch on one side, and have ripped off a chunk of the arch on the passenger side. I have a set of nearly new tyres on the original steel vented chrome hubcap wheels and they 165/80/15 as per the below pic. Is this the correct tyre size, is it likely to ride better on the originals. Is there an offset on the fronts, could I keep the spacers that are currently fitted and fit the original steels. All advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John.

165x15 is the correct original size, yes.

If they're Coupe fitment steel wheels, then there's no need to use spacers.

I originally had 195/70x14 on 6J Cobra Supalots with 12mm offset on my Coupe and they fitted perfectly - no spacers and no clearance issues on the front. On the rear I fitted GTE arches to prevent slight contact. What is the offset of your Wolfies? If it's correct, removal of the spacers maybe all you need to do.

The car will be a bit softer on the original wheels as there's more compliance in the sidewall. If you prefer the look I'd stick with them. They're probably more rare than the Wolfrace.

Hi David,

The Wolfrace are 6X14 - 105. I am assuming 105 is the off set, is that off set ok for a Coupe? The fronts were fitted with spacers (haven't checked the back yet). I tried the steel wheels last week but they didn't do it for me. The Wolfies have grown on me. They need a refurb and was thinking of polishing the first two outer rims then powder coating the centres black. I have a spare Wolfie and that's got a 185/70/14 tyre fitted and it clears the arch nicely.

Hi Brucky,
.105" is, I think, the original offset and equates to 3mm. The 12mm wheels I had were fine on the Coupe so the 3mm 6J should fit within the arches fine without spacers. Just check the clearance between the inside of the wheels and the front wishbones as the Coupe originally had 15" wheels and these will obviously give more clearance than 14". The fact that your spare fits OK suggests that they'll be OK. The following diagram might help understand the affect of wheel offset:

I'll be interested to see how the Wolfies turn out with black centres and polished rims as the Revolutions or Minilites done that way look fantastic. Do send some pics. :)
