Coupe Gearbox swop.

Post by stevmale » Thu Oct 26, 2017 6:42 pm

I am hoping to start some local sprinting next year with my Coupe.

The original O/D box is fitted and performs ok.

But I am considering either :

Removing the O/D and replacing it with a 4 speed shaft & tail housing from a Zephyr 4 speed box
or
Installing a Type 5 with a bell housing that allow a hydraulic clutch mechanism.

Does anybody know is this easy route or even possible .

or do I have to fit a type 5 with a cable + pedal etc.

Personally I would stick with what you have got - it will enable you to change gear quicker by use of the OD switch - clutch less. Our local sprint man has his set up so it works on all forward gears.

If you change the housing, e,g, type 9 that strictly puts you in mod sport. Provided selector bushes etc. Are ok the overdrive box is ok. On some tracks (eg aintree) overdrive third is useful. I would not convert the overdrive to work on second as this may be too much for it.

I can only assume that a change of gearbox is only permitted (to not fall foul of the rules) to another type as fitted to the same car type? In the case of a V6 Coupe, then it means only the 2-rod overdrive gearbox (although if a Scimitar GT, then you could fit the ZF as used in some straight 6 cars?) but in a 5a, you could use the 2-rod, type 5 or Type F (3 rod box)? If it applied to "Scimitar" then that doesn't include the Type 9 being used in the Middlebridge?

Never try and argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you based on experience.

That’s how Blue Thunder used a 2.9 :-)

For the box though,

Roadgoing Series Production Cars.
(a) The gearbox and differential casing must be externally identifiable as that fitted to the original model or specified option and remain in their original position.

Modified Series Production Cars and Modified Specialist Production Cars
12.7.1. Transmission layout to remain as original.
12.7.2. Gearbox and differential are free.
