No, I can't see how they can because of the cut out?! Anyway... Cambelt is identical... But, if I get the dot/white cambelt stripe central on the cam pulley (and I mean as central as possible by eye, which should be pretty accurate, with the arrow pointing straight down) then my crank marks read 15°? I'm guessing it should read 0°?

So... Maybe they can be put on inaccurately?

What I have done is: removed the distributor, set both adjuster bolts in the centre of their adjustment (does anyone know if this is correct?), moved the punch mark one tooth to the left and re-inserted. With the cam cover off it is easier to check that the gears have meshed and shifted the dot to align with the mark on the shaft (i.e. the punchmark and line are now facing straight up and in alignment).

I haven't managed to try and start her yet because I got soaked...

I thought I should adjust the rockers whilst I have the cover off again, but the manual says to do it warm, anyone have any problems doing it cold?

I did notice that whether at 0° TDC or 15° there is little difference in the amount of rocker arm movement, so this doesn't seem to be a perfect way of checking TDC or... should you be able to feel one side getting compressed by this point? I'm guessing the cam hasn't moved far enough yet to make a deal of difference...

Lastly, the fuel hose I used as vacuum tube on the turbo had folded due to too tight a radius, so I shall replace this...

When I took the damper etc. Off, I didn't attempt to split them because it felt like they were bonded together (they certainly didn't want to come apart). So I put the bottom pulley and damper back on as one part... If I align the bottom pulley at 0° then the punch mark on the cam pulley is offline by, I'm guessing, the 15°...

It's possible that when the car started the other day, I had aligned the distributor with the bottom pulley set at 15° (which I now suspect is actually 0°). When I later tried to start the car, I had probably aligned the bottom pulley at 0°, which is probably, in reality, 30° or maybe -15° because my brain now hurts..?

Yep, I think it may have been retarded by 15°, would this cause the non starting and flashes out of the emergency blow off valve?

possibly - I suspected valve timing first because it’s physically coming back through the inlet.

It could just be the angle of the pictures but your pip and white line seem to be at 10 o'clock not 12 like Jim's at TDC?

also it shouldnt be possible for the timing marks to move on the crank pulley because its located by the woodruff key, the only way it could move is the rubber in the pulley braking up or the woodruff wobbling in the keyway and wearing a gap (this happened to one of my DET cranks)

Yes, the bottom pulley is an oddity... It didn't seem to be damaged and the woodruff seemed fine: I think I have a photo somewhere...

One thing I have noticed, and I don't know if it makes any difference, the plate under the rotor arm was installed by a PO upside down. So, in Jim's photo, the plate has a marker that points straight up.

I think it's my photo Darryl, I'll take a look...

The crank/woodruff photo is during fitting and the belt wasn't aligned at that point.
