SS1 brakes

Post by Jasper53 » Sun Jun 09, 2019 4:44 pm

Hi all, having bother getting a decent pedal on our car. When car is not running and all vacuum has gone pedal moving about 25mm before brakes take hold which is great. When engine is running it drops down to less than half a pedal. Back brakes seem to be adjusted OK and are just binding when off, handbrake locks up fine. Got new pads in the front. We have bled by normal methods and with a vacuum bleeder on the airline. Still the same result. I know we are all used to our new cars stopping in no time, but these brakes are rubbish at the moment. I know it’s scorned upon but we were going to try bleeding with the engine running and see if that make any difference. Any ideas would be welcomed.
Cheers, Rob

Also, have you bled all 3 nipples on each caliper?

Difficult to see which nipple is doing what? I have a couple of spare callipers, think I’ll split one and see what route the fluid takes. Give the fronts another go tomorrow. Waiting of the ignition bits so not going anywhere yet.

I used to use those orange silicone 'self-bleed tubes', couple of quid each, fit to all three nipples and bleed simultaneously

Top nipple does the upper 2 pistons, centre 2 nipples do the 2nd (lower) circuit.

That’s assuming the callipers aren’t on upside down, of course. Metro nearside is SS1 offside and vice versa.

I’ll have a look. Assume both top nipples need to appear at the top on both callipers? If the thing is on the wrong side will be at the bottom? Interesting they can be put on wrong, good job we have a spare one or two! Hopefully we can match a set.
Cheers for that.

The 2 nipples are in the middle (ish), between the two pistons in each side (outside, inside). The third one should be on the top.

Cheers Phil, got the brakes sorted. Bled them all with servo working rather than how normally done. Worked a treat and callipers are on the right way round.
Thanks for your input, most helpful.
