Rear drop links alternatives for SS1/Sabre

Post by Corky » Sat Dec 29, 2018 12:18 pm

I've been using the BMW E39 drop links on my small sports for a few years now, and have also tried out Roger's rose jointed home brew type. The problem with the BMW ones is that they're not a perfect fit and I've had a couple crack or work loose. So I decided to go on the hunt for something that has the M12 1.75 thread for the trailing arm (meaning that you don't have to pack out the thread to M10 or put a nut on the back).

I've come up with a Jaguar part, no. 18-16 060 0004

It has the correct thread for arm and a hole for a bolt to connect up to the ARB. Not sure if the hole is M12, but I'm thinking of ordering a couple to see if they fit.

Before I do, does anyone have access to one of these, or has anyone tried one in an SS1 ?

Another possibility is this from a Range Rover Sport https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123447397039. Just need to find a design that allows it to be tightened into the trailing arm, as this one doesn't look like you can get a spanner on it.

Both threads are M12 1.75

I’m going to order a couple of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/253350907777.

They look as near to OEM as anything else I’ve seen. Although a tad longer.

Some of the BMW ones wouldn’t take welding. They were made from papier-mâché or cheese, not sure which. I dare say with some of these ones of the right quality, welding could be the way forwards if they need shortening.

They will need shortening. Unless you like sparks under acceleration or run stupid high spring rates (and like endless wheelspin off the line)

Just ordered a set of the jag fronts - reckon a bolt through the top or bottom?

I haven’t measured the standard ones but they can’t be much shorter than 4” between centres can they?

I spoke with Graham Walkers a few weeks ago and they were already looking at sourcing or having a batch of these knocked up. They might have them available by now but I've been too busy to ask them.

Which part number Jim ?

All those I listed claimed to be M12.

I did buy some, but cannot for the life of me find them in the garage to check, or remember exactly which ones they were.

The Mitsubishi L200 ones are looking like the best bet, but come in different thread pitches depending on which brand you buy. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Febi-BILSTEI ... SwjXNacqT9

On my ex Sabre I fitted Daewoo Nexus drop links identified by RR; he bought a box full cheap of EBay.

Not sure where I got them; possibly from RR :?:

M12 studs but M10 holes the other end. The jag fronts you linked in the first post.

Just been checking my Sabre thread...it's not entirely clear but pretty sure I've done some rears; question is which car/front or back

Edit

Its the DET I fitted them too. BMW type http://www.scimitarweb.co.uk/sgwrs/view ... 30#p338765

Ahh, so should be usable then?

Will the bottom hole drill out? Failing that, a bolt packed with a helicoil would be fine for the ARB fixing point.
