Aux belt clearance issue

Afternoon folks.

Having a look round the engine bay this afternoon and noticed the fan blades on the alternator are awfully close to the moulded coolant pipe. So much so that it's actually got a small nick out of it. The belt also runs perilously close to the water pump inlet elbow

No problem I thought, I'll just adjust the alternator and fit a smaller belt.. However

Whilst eyeing it up, I've noticed that a smaller belt in tension will be running closer to the elbow and with vibration will be catching.

My thought process now is that I could add in a small idler pulley where the tensioner bolt goes. Im just wondering if anyone has run into this issue before and has a better solution

Engine is standard cvh and the current belt is a 4pk780

Could idler be fitted here?

I think that you have the same 'replacement' / 'after-market' water pump that I ended up with. The original water pump elbow starts earlier andpoints 'up-hill' more steeply and gives more clearance. (link to a photo of the two here) http://www.scimitarweb.co.uk/sgwrs/view ... hp?t=37302
note the 'after market one has the blind end vs a cast end on the 'genuine' article

I did some hacking around of alternator mount , but I'm running a Montego drive belt 755 R4, (and I can't find my list of 'alternatives' that I've fitted over the years :-( )

I did raise the bottom radiator-hose mount up about 25 - 30mm , to give a bit of additional clearance

Ah. Brill. I'm assuming original pumps are quite rare to find now.

I was putting it back to get some measurements and snapped the head clean off the adjuster tensioning bolt.. :

I've taken the engine mount off that side so I can get that snapped bolt out but I'm wondering if it's possible to lower the upper alternator mounting point slightly for more clearance..

The design of the "cranked elbow" water pumps does vary depending on manufacturer. That one is not ideal.

Best course of action if you don't fancy changing the pump is probably to strap the pipes out the way as best you can and to protect any vulnerable areas with a thin strip of aluminium fixed around the pipe.

ED beaten to it already.
OEM Motorcraft pumps are available. Look also for any that are cast by GMB Japan. Quinton Hazel pumps are or were to the same design.

Thanks for the advice. Took the belt cover off to get the front mount bolt out.and the belt isn't in the best nick so I'll look for a genuine pump and stick a belt on there at the same time.

I will try raising the whole pipe as suggested by Alan and see if it clears the fan. If not, I could always find a coolant t piece and re route it some how

Just for completeness, here is the other type that I mention with the GMB Japan cast body. Easily identified by the core plug in the neck section.

Also sold at some point by Quinton Hazel and possibly MoProd and no doubt other brands.

These have a nicely cranked neck that moves the pipe out of harms way, and generally seem of good quality.

I did see a few similar in appearance to that but wasn't sure.

I won the bid on the motorcraft one so I'm just waiting patiently for the postman

and TWO possible failure points for core plugs to rust through ? ?? ?
