Potentially dumb question - SS1 sunroof

Post by pauluspaolo » Fri Sep 14, 2018 9:55 am

Hi there,
I keep the hardtop on my SS1 99% of the time. If I want to go topless - not a pretty sight  - I'll wind the windows down & take the sunroof out (I store it behind the passengers seat). However the catch on the sunroof has broken & the repairs I've made aren't holding up particularly well :(

So my question is: were all the sunroofs fitted in SS1 hardtops the same type made by the same manufacturer? I suspect the answer will be a resounding "NO" but if they were all from the same manufacturer has anyone any idea who the manufacturer is/was? I've not really had a proper look but I can't see a manufacturer's name on mine. I'm happy to take & post a photo if this will help?

Many thanks :)

Many thanks for the reply - potentially of interest but mine's the pop up type (with a single central latch - over centre type) rather than a wind up/down unit, so yours is obviously a different make/model. It's really only the catch I need - the glass & surround are both fine - but it obviously needs to fit the glass & also mate into the bit attached to the roof itself.

I'll try & take some photos at lunchtime & post them on this thread :)

it was a factory option, so I would have thought those fitted by Reliant are probably all the same?

Potentially dumb question - SS1 sunroof

Hi there,

Back in the 80's there were really only two sunroof manufacturers.

They were Britax (They went out of business years ago but the name was bought by someone else)

The other company was tudor webasto.

They are still going the aftermarket side of the business is based in Doncaster but you might find some parts on Ebay or elsewhere if you google them.

I think Britax bought Weathershields and they took on all of the sunroof manufacture - Britax are still going strong.

Webasto bought (or merged with?) Hollandia who made the glass electric sunroof in the 6b.

I didn't know they'd moved to Doncaster after the Sutton Coldfield factory ran into trouble.

There was still a Tudor Webasto factory in Sutton Coldfield (actually Minworth) last week when I drove past it - although which bit of Tudor Webasto product range it serves now, I don’t know.

Still working on the photos - it's been absolutely bouncing it down on & off today & the interior of the car has remained dry (a minor miracle in itself!) so I thought it best not to disturb the sunroof

Will try to get some sorted over the weekend. I've had a quick look on Ebay but can't find anything :(

Oh the joys of Sunroof's.

Britax went bump and was bought out by another company that manufacture under that trade name.

Tudor Webasto was a joint venture the Tudor part of it was bought out by webasto when the English division got into trouble years ago.

They then bought out Hollandia and it's now all under one company.

The aftermarket division in minworth closed down but due to customer demand it reopen 10 years later in Doncaster.

The factory in Minworth only does the OE market so JLR, Honda etc no aftermarket stuff.

The reason I know all this is that I used to work there as Production manager and the ex other half still does.
