What do I put the engine on?

Post by rhss1 » Mon Sep 03, 2018 12:23 pm

Everything has to come out of the frame.

Engine (1600) is one of the last bits and I have some questions:

I have two lifting eyes at diagonally opposite corners of the block. Can I lift the engine&gerabox as a unit with these or do I need to split them.

What do put the engine(&box) on - just carefully down on the oilpan or what? Space is limited so I am tempted to make a wood cradle with wheels so it can be got out of the way.

depends on clearance you have ABOVE the car etc

engine and box can come out as a unit. (UNWIELDY but possible) splitting the two is aruddy nightmare getting at all the bolts etc.

but if you don't need to pull box, consider leaving it behind as gearbox will empty contents out of prop-shaft seal unless you split it at diff and then 'tie prop-shaft in' saves oil all over floor etc

I just 'carefully' set it on garage floor. seemed to survive OK :-)

for 'cradle' use one of the dollies froM likes of ALDI / LIDL. . . .

The bottom of an old supermarket trolley can be modified with a few bits of an old pallet to take the weight of an engine then it's dead easy to move around wherever you want, I did it for a rover v8 many years ago.

assuming that ASDA / ALDI don't spot you legging it across car-park with trolley in tow

I removed the engine only & left the gearbox in situ, I didn't find it that difficult to remove all the engine-g/box bolts. I did strip as much off the front end of the car as possible - bumper front panel, radiator etc - as the engine's set quite a long way back.

I stored my engines - the Zetec to be fitted & then the removed CVH - for ages on a modified/strengthened pallet mounted on strong castors. I still have it in the garage if you'd like it for free? You'd have to collect it - I'm in Leeds if you're anywhere near? You'd probably need a decent sized hatchback/estate/small van. Please send me a PM if you're interested. There's no great urgency but it I don't need the thing anymore & I am slowly working my way through the redundant stuff in the garage :)

I used some discarded kitchen worktop with four casters- but the engine ( Rover V8 ) was on a subframe and the subframe bolted to the work top as thus
