SS1 1800Ti Starts and Stalls approx 9 mins later.

Hi everyone from Sunny Perth, Australia. Been a while since I have been on the forum.

My Hawker Energy Battery failed after 15 years, so I bought a identical replacement ODYSSEY battery. These no maintenance batteries generally have a life of 9 to 12 years.

On fitting it the car started fine and ran for about 9 minutes, then stalled (I think because the ECU has turned off the ignition circuit). Then it cranks over but will not start. If I leave the car to cool the whole process repeats itself. Thus it looks like a faulty sensor issue which is temperature related.

I looked at the diagnostic codes on the ECU and it appears that no fault had been recorded in the diagnostic position (clockwise) and as far as I can see I am getting 44 (ECCS operating properly). That is both leds flashing four times simultaneously. I did not read any other led sequence.

Thus I am having trouble identifying which sensor has failed.

I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions based on similar faults/experiences.

Cheers, Jim

Start with the basics - have you lost fuel or spark when it stops and won’t start.

After it doesn't start, remove fuel tank filler cap. Do you get a rush of air? If so fu starvation caused by tank vacuum

The LEDs are supposed to flash red first then green for error codes, not together. So your '44' is not an error code.
My own ECU flashes red & green together once, then twice, then 3, 4 and 5 times before repeating this sequence.
This sequence indicates 5 different ECU modes. There is info on t'web about this, I just don't have it to hand,
but for error codes I believe it's mode 3 you need. Turn the screw back just after the 3 flashes have happened
to 'fix' it in mode 3. Then you should be able to get the flashing red then green error code(s) if any.

Thanks to everyone for the replies. The car finally would not start at all. The ECU gave the CAS error (I didn't realise that the ECU diagnostic screw needed turning back after the three flashes Henry, I appreciate that advice). Bought and fitted a new CAS (the second in five years) and the car is running great (touch wood :) ).

Glad you got this solved JIm. When I read this thread, I thought the problem sounded remarkably like the problem I've been facing the last few months. In fact, I'd also started to think it was temperature related. My car would always just stall for no good reason, and it would fail to re-start.

Fitted new crank angle sensor today (following your excellent instructions) and it's like a new car. Started and stopped it numerous times. Left it running and it didn't miss a beat. A big relief! I just hope the CAS lasts longer than 5 years! At least I now know how to test it. :D
