SS1 Fuel Pump Query

Post by murcamkin » Sun Jan 21, 2018 5:10 pm

Think I need a new fuel pump for 1989 SS1. The old one has an inlet outlet and a vacuum pipe. Looked at replacements and thy only have inlet and outlet. Can I fit one and block off the vacuum or is there an alternative ?

I can't imagine why a carb engine fuel pump would need a vacuum? does the pipe come from the inlet manifold or carb?

someone posted a picture of a CVH pump with a bypass line recently (second return basically) - never seen (or needed) one myself :-)

No Jim, it's the sole return line for a 1400 with a dfth or a late 1600 with a TLDM.

I did post the part number on the thread by Joscac

Okay just looked back - in out and return. G97 didn’t have one when I got it so I guess it works fine without it?

Certainly not vacuum though.

SS1 Fuel Pump Query

Seconded on the part number "87SF-9350-AA" and that should bring you up results on google or eBay for a replacement.

Just to come back to an explanation.
Original equipment on the SS1 1400 is a Weber 28/30 DFTH with single 8mm feed stub.
Original equipment on "Late" 1600 or those fitted with the Lean-burn engine, is a 28/32 TLDM with a single 8mm feed stub.

For these cars the pump has an 8mm stub on the draw side. It then has an 8mm pumped outlet which feeds the carb, and a 6mm stub with very small internal bore, perhaps 1 or 2mm. This may look like a vacuum connection, but it is infact the return stub, which on an SS1 connects to the 6mm (1/4") return hardline.

Without the appropriate return connection, you run the risk of the fuel pump over-pressurising the carb and pushing past the closed float valve.

Worth noting that the SS1 1300 fitted with the Motorcraft VV uses an 8mm in and out fuel pump with no extra connection. Instead it has a 3 way plastic 8/8/6mm connector in the pressurised feed hose to carburettor, which acts as the return pipe and allows excess fuel / pressure to return to the tank.
