SST pop-up headlamps

Postby les » Wed May 17, 2017 7:58 am

Hello,
when I switch off the headlamps they continue to cycle up and down a few times before staying down.
Is there a simple cure or is this going to be difficult?
Any info. much appreciated, thank you.

Probably the switches on the headlight motor need cleaning - or they are sticking.

Can you get to the motor switches or does the assembly have to be taken off the car?
Greeny, can you briefly explain the adjustment on the bar.
Thanks for reply, Les.

Are there any diagrams or illustrations to give a visual on what the situation is.
Thanks, Les.

This is the bible to understanding small sports headlights - bear in mind that it's written for the twin motor SS1 but your single motor SST is broadly the same but has a torque tube to join both headlights with the motor inaccessible in the centre in front of the radiator!

Thanks again, Les.

Rare ones!!
On the passenger side near the spare wheel on the motor there is an extendable threaded bar a just that (don't forget the lock nuts) get the lights to sit flush when down and properly up when up.

The turnbuckle sets the lights position but I can't see how it would cause the lights to cycle? The only thing that tells them to stop are the limit switches (inside the motor).

Mine were bottoming out and not settling in the off area of the switch so took a couple of cycles to get there.

Edit from memory it was over cycling rather than under.

Worth remembering that when the motor comes to its stop the motor drive relay is supposed to apply earth to the side which was previously 12volts. This acts like a brake on the motor stopping it quickly - if the relay is not earthing the motor correctly then the motor will overrun.

I may have a further issue, but when she was last out they worked perfectly and sat right up.or down and no nodding.

Does anyone know which is the motor drive relay on the SST 1400 1990.
Where does this earth to. Would this be a common earth for the loom somewhere or is it specific.
It seems difficult to find information or illustration for SST, it being a model in between.
If I have to remove the motor, is it best to remove radiator or the front bumper panel.
Nothing is visible as it stands.
Thanks all.
Les.

Not sure where the relay is but if its the same as the SS1's its at the end of the fuse box. If you are looking for the earth connection to brake the motor I would expect it to be just a link on the relay base. Just swap the relays around as most of them don't use the normally closed contact anyway - if the problem goes away then you know what the cause was.
