PPS I think that there was a tie-up with GM at some point?

A body structure for the SS1 was devised with many similarities to the Pontiac Fiero concurrently being developed by GM: unstressed plastic panels, with properties appropriate to their location on the car, supported by an underbody frame (and fixed to it using Torx bolts). Plastics giant Bayer had experimented with a similar method in the late 1960s but no manufacturer at the time had taken it up. Whilst the Fiero made use of significant levels of automation (with a $300m development budget), this was beyond Reliant’s capabilities.

Which would suggest some sort of Lotus connection through the VARI body moulding technology? I have no idea if the Fiero shared any electrics but wouldn't be surprised if they ended up with common switchgear. Huh, more Internet trawling...

Most of that is copied from here.

There was an aborted attempt on the US market with a GM powered Small Sports but apart from a Vauxhall connection, I don’t know if there was any GM involvement during design (despite obvious Lotus chassis similarities).
