poor running

Hello Everyone,
my 1600 ss1 has an issue and I wondered if anyone can help?
When cold, the car starts straightaway and auto choke sems to be working fine but when you put your foot on the gas to move off, it splutters and virtually dies. On the move it is fine and when warmed up it is fine. I was wondering about air leak or lean mixture?

Sounds like a vacuum problem from the brief description, though somebody will be along shortly to tell you otherwise with better experience than my own.

Have you tested the vacuum advance tube/pipe? it might possibly be a bad vacuum advance.

(I hate responding to these things because I'm usually wrong)

Are you sure the choke is not sticking on for too long.

It is fine when warmed up Peter, the problem only seems to be when it is stone cold

check that the wee flappy thing controlling the air mix from hot air from exhaust or cold air is not bust, or an air leak form the vacuum pipes, took ages to settle it down when I first got the car to get it to run in winter when cold, others had obviously had same problems cos the carb settings were all over the place!!

if not a new issue have a look at the electric choke (if fitted) if lucky maybe just 'off the mark' there is a mark scribed on the carb and you can move the auto choke a wee bitty to & fro to adjust how long it stays on, or if really unlucky the plastic will be in lots of small pieces :(

Is it like most SS1s with an electric autochoke, or a later one like mine with the water powered autochoke?

Also on the subject of air leaks, there are a number of places where this could happen, the vacuum pipe from the manifold to the dizzy isn't just a plain pipe, it goes through a temperature controlled valve and a spark delay.sustain widget which could be faulty or leaking from one of the joints? Also there's a controlled air bleed under the carb, from the rocker cover ventilation system.

thanks everyone. I'll take the air cleaner off and have a look at the pipwork.

I took the air cleaner assembly off yesterday and although the two pipes were connected on the underneath of it, the connector thing was very loose. I checked all the other little pipes I could see and they all seemed o.k. Re-assembled, taking care not to trap the little pipes or pull the connector thing apart. Started it up today and it ran like a dream! phew!
