XJS electric mirrors wiring

The original isn't a Ford switch, no idea where it came from. Middlebridge started using the Ford switch and it is a much nicer job, getting rid of the rocker switch.

May be a good idea to add the Ford mirror switch to the same sticky as it's a better switch. Just an idea.

XJS electric mirrors wiring

I now have a Ford switch, the wire colours are somewhat different to Jim's PDF but some amateurish fumbling with a meter has revealed which wires connect to each other at each switch position so I think I'm making progress. Mirrors should arrive this week and then the real fun can begin!

XJS electric mirrors wiring

Post by Terry H » Mon Aug 07, 2017 10:07 am

Just found this Alex, it is the Ford switch wiring instructions. I cant remember who the author is but it could be AJL.
Wiring...

Power to pin 6
Earth to pin 4

the common of all motors goes to pin 3
Left vertical goes to pin 1
Left horizontal goes to pin 7
Right vertical goes to pin 2
Right horizontal goes to pin 5

The mirror motors have two pairs, green and white and blue and yellow. A quick test with a PP3 will show which way they are connected. Just connect the negatives together to make the three wire link.
Mirror colours
Left hand (nearside mirror) working as follows:

Join the blue and green and connect to pin 3 (common)
Connect yellow from mirror to pin 1
Connect white from mirror to pin 7
Right hand (offside mirror)
Join the blue and green and connect to pin 3 (common)

Connect yellow from mirror to pin 2
Connect white from mirror to pin 5

Hope this Helps.

Thanks to you Terry and the original author, may well have been AJL.

The details agree with what I'd worked out, save that I thought pin 6 must be earth due to it having two black wires.... can't imagine that would cause any bother apart from the mirrors going the 'wrong' way.

Alex.

Mirrors arrived, all seems OK. I was a bit doubtful that a PP3 battery would run the motors, should have known better.

I'm thinking of painting them body-colour, if I can get the plastic surround off. Does anyone know how to dismantle these mirrors?

It is done! A bit of a saga due to having four different sets of colours in the wiring (on the mirrors, the original Scimitar loom, the Ford switch and a length of multicore I had to buy because I'm moving the switch to the driver's door) but several pages of notes and a bit of trial and error got there in the end. One slight amendment - I moved the connector from position 6 on the switch to position 3 to give me a common wire for each mirror. Seemed the neatest way to do it.

I also found out how to take them apart - turn the mirror fully inwards, then prise off gently with something wide - I used a steel rule. The mirror backing sits on 3 ball-and-socket joints which can each be undone in this way. Thanks to Corky who let me into the secret!
