Oaksey's Rebel - For Sale

Post by Oaksey » Sat Dec 19, 2015 7:50 pm

Collected this stunner today
Image

Fits in rather nicely
Image

It looks a bit scruffy but it's not too bad. It needs all brakes, suspension bushes, probably shocks, tyres, paint etc etc but it already has an 850 engine so that's saved some money

Even though it's going to be painted, I couldn't help but see what the paint comes up like
Image

Straight to work getting stripped down. Have done one front corner and got the bonnet off to start sanding down
Image
Image

As I'll need new tyres anyway and 12" tyres aren't too common, I'm going to get some 13s. To trial what I can get away with, I put one of the wellers on. The original wheels are only 12x3.5" and I'm going to put on 13x7s most likely and it looks like they'll fit quite easily with the right offset as the weller only touches the back upper wishbone arm on full lock
Image
Image

Some arch modification may be needed...
Image

The aim ultimately will be a 140-150bhp Zetec engine, different rear axle, proper brakes etc but for now it's going to be restored pretty standard so I have a hope of getting reasonable insurance quotes on it

I saw that on ebay a couple of times, then saw Joe Mason had it and had doubled the price!

You do like a challenge, don't you? :D
Why has a PO cut holes in the front wings?

You can't expect much else, he's a dealer. He can't have made much out of it because I didn't pay what he advertised it for and I got some extra bits thrown in too from his stores and other cars

It's because the mirrors on it were quite valuable and someone fancied them. Personally I'm not bothered as I'd have removed them anyway :)

At least you bought it instead of just thinking about it like I did for months :)

Well done on your new purchase :)
13x5.5 wheels with 165/70 tyres are about as big as you can go with the standard arches.
The back axle is only "located" on skinny cart springs & these flex sideways a fair bit so limit how close you can get the tyres to the inner arches.
A Watts linkage would be a good addition. Come to think about it a fully linked rear suspension with coilovers would be even better :)
The front suspension is pretty good with just the addition of some fully adjustable coilovers. Its debatable whether a front antiroll bar is worth the effort.

If it still has drums on the front that's the first mod I would do - they were a nightmare on our Kittens and one of the favourite kitten club mods.

yes, basically replace all of the mechanical parts :-)

still reckon a rebel or kitten on an SS1 Ti chassis would be a hoot

I know very little about rebels but thought they used mini wheels? The reason I ask is they are 4 x4" rather than 4x100 PCD.. Tried it on a mini once and the studs sheared quickly! Looks like a wicked project mate.

The kitten used mini wheels so its likely the Rebel did as well.

Yes, they're 4x101.6 or 3.5" the wellers were close enough to fit over the studs just so I could check clearances for larger wheels. I've seen quite a few nice looking sets but I should probably spend my money on getting it running and moving first

Sadly joe does sell his cars at horrendously inflated prices. I have a car the same as his, I'm selling at £1300, he's selling his at £2500 iirc :O

Most of them are dangerous. One of my friends bought a regal. Drove here the day after joe had it mot'd and it was rotten on the front crossmember. Rear brakes leaking and pipes were on point of braking too!
