Nothing to stop you filing a couple of flats on the rod then you can put a spanner on it ( adjustable ) or a pair of mole grips - you can then apply more pressure on the nut. The rod has a big enough diameter to allow for a couple of flats.

The two hammer method works a treat, will have to log that in the old memory bank!
