Tape control

Post by ard126k » Mon May 27, 2019 9:04 pm

Does anyone else still have the original Philips radio/cassette player in their GTC? if so do you know what the button with the triangle's for? Looks like a 'play' button but since the tape is supposed to start automatically it can't be that.
Reason for asking is that mine only plays the tape if I hold the button in, which isn't ideal at all.

Cheers

Alex.

This one. Didn't realise there were more than one! I think it's an AC700 or 800? The button in question's beside the tuning knob. And I've just realised what the symbol above the tuning knob is.

I think it changes side doesn’t it -rather than taking the tape out and putting it back in the other way up as on previous models?

Takes me back....
I think it is the "Play" button, and it is supposed to latch in when you press it, and probably automatically pop out when the load gets too great (i.e. the end of the tape, or if your tapes are old, then randomly when the motor can't turn the spigots etc).
Something might need looking at..

I am hoping it's a mechanical malfunction - it certainly feels like one. Thanks for the link Jim I've downloaded some of the diagrams but I was off school the day we did electronics so they make as much sense as some of our elected representatives.
I'll have the thing out of the dash and see what I can see. I'll be back if I find anything useful.

I found a service manual for the tape deck at https://elektrotanya.com/philips_d4-ser ... nload.html but alas it's in Dutch (single not double) so not a huge help. Some relatively clear diagrams of how the thing is supposed to work but I don't think I'm any nearer a solution.

We do have some Dutch speakers on the forum, so might be worth trying the overseas section?

There has to be a joke somewhere with a tape deck from the Dutch company Philips and Dutch speakers? :D

Tape control

You're woofing!

Seriously,I've had a lot of expensive tape decks do this, it's the auto stop mechanism being too efficient. Sometimes the pawl on the play button weakens with age so the auto stop is triggered just by tape tension from the motor. If you can dismantle and ascertain this is the cause, then maybe a 3d printing company could make the part if spares are unobtainable.

Sorry, I'm squawking now!

If the button never tries to stay when you push it, then as Trevor says, the pawl might have broken off, or if there's a solenoid to hold the button in, it might be a blown transistor. Tried looking at the Dutch link above, but it only shows a small bit of the circuit diagram, so can't diagnose any further. If you have the schematic and can scan it and attach it, then those of us with an electronics background could make suggestions as where to look.

The 'electrotanya' site gave me the whole manual (31 pages) with diagrams. There is a solenoid at the back of the plate attached to the 'play' button so you may be on to something!
