You could machine the collets to fit 2.25" springs - that's what I did with my Spax after finding the 2.5" springs were loose

Me too - machined the AVO collets down from 2.5" in order to fit the Spax 300 lb springs. Nice and snug now.

That is a good idea. would save a bit of waiting. but good news Spax have gotten back to me and are processing the order for 2 x 2.5" top collets to match the lower ones and the springs that are on the way :)

Just wondering what is good about Spax (other than if you have them already)

Yes Dennis, you guessed correctly - I had a pair of Spax springs just waiting to be used.
Here's some background - not relevant, but perhaps interesting anyway; I also have AVO springs but these are lighter (275 lbs) and when I suggested using these on the back of the Sabre Six, with its longitudinal watts linkages and torsion control using the 7HA back axle, both Tony Richardson and the late Geoff Cooper threw up their hands in horror - to avoid the diff falling apart the rear end needs to be as rigid as you can stand!!

Springs... 2.5" 2.25" whats the difference

Post by JoeySully » Wed Jun 26, 2019 10:00 am

So after a couple of weeks back and forth the collets arrived FOC but I was away and didn't get to check them until Monday morning.
To my surprise I found they had sent me 2 more 2.25" collets instead of the 2.5" I had requested

So back on the phone to explain myself once more only to be told the next day that there are no 2.5" collets for these shocks and the 2.25" are the only ones they have ever supplied with these.
They assured me that they had tested them with 2.5" springs and were happy that they were secure and safe to use.

Does anyone else have any Spax from GW? do they have 2.5" top collets ?

Hi Joey, sorry to hear of the confusion. I went through Tony Shakeshaft and got every thing right first time. I've one spare 2.5 collar if you're really stuck, foc to your address? Regards, Crusty.

yes maybe that was my mistake not contacting Tony directly via email. The phone number just went to the main office and i ended up dealing with 3 different people from 3 different departments.

Thanks you for the offer i may take you up on it. Can you confirm that the collet you have is actually 63mm wide ?

Right, the overall diameter is 80mm, the bit inside the spring is 59mm.
From the top, the socket dia is 26mm and the hole for the damper piston rod is 20mm.

I think that's why I decided to machine the collets to fit 2.25" springs

59mm is a lot closer to the 57mm needed for 2.25" than it is to the 63.5mm needed for 2.5" springs!
