Have to replace my cracked windscreen and at £350 and 3 week lead time I will not be installing a new one. Trying to find a second hand windscreen now.Thinking the GW replacement rubber looks a good option. BUT I have never installed a windscreen before and a pro wants £40 an hour. What is the latest thought on how to install? Rubber in hot water with lots of lubricant. Screen into rubber surround first and then surround into car or surround into car first and the screen into rubber surround? Am I crazy to even consider it? Any other thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

For a 5a, it’s rubber to body first, then fit the screen. Whatever you do, do not be tempted to cut the seal shorter, thinking it’s too long. It will fit.

I did mine, single handed. I won’t do doing one again in a hurry. Might be a different story with two people in the summer, but if a pro is going to quote me £100, I’ll have his arm off.

Now that fills me with trepidation. I am still leaning towards screen first and good old para cord to pull the surround in.

For a 6a, it’s rubber to screen first - then fit the assembly to the car.

What has been done (given the screen is larger that the hole in the body) is have it bonded in like modern screens? http://www.scimitarweb.co.uk/sgwrs/view ... en#p429691

Is the car not insured? You only pay the excess for a new screen and it doesn't affect your no claims discount or premium.

That was my other route. Car insured fully comp but has £75 excess for the screen.

Why is that relevant?

Not relevant but was a surprise. Only 2 listed as available in the UK and a three month turn round schedule for any after they have gone.

It's a no brainer really isn't it. insurance all the way, and you don't have to do anything.

Don’t forget that if they break their screen it’s their issue too. I suspect they may ask you to source/pay for a new seal so best to check first as it’s an oddball profile and I think only available from the traders.

I'd agree with what's been said, insurance is by far the best option. I had to replace a cracked screen in the Yellow Peril. The pros did it in the time it took me to fill out the paperwork, and it only cost me the excess (at that time it was only £50, think it's £75 now). I wouldn't consider doing it any other way.

You could ask them to order a club screen. They may ask for a "betterment" fee but would be worth it. Discuss that with the insurance company, the windsreen fitters are likely to be uninterested.

I’d pay a pro every time for a screen replacement and if you can get a heated club screen by paying a bit more then happy days
