Which WEBER carb is fitted in my SE6 ?

Post by FrenchNewbie » Fri Aug 31, 2018 10:57 am

Hello guys,

I need a new carb but I can't say what kind of carb is exactly fitted in my car.

- Is this a WEBER 38DGAS ?
- WEBER 38DGMS ?
- Or a WEBER 40DFA-1 ?

I found some 38DGAS on eBay but the throttle cable fitting is very different than mine.

Thank you very much for helping !

On my weber it is stamped on the edge, just by the needle valves indicating what type it is. I can see in one of your photos it has some markings but cannot make them out.

It looks like a 38DGAS, but "converted" to Manual Choke operation?

You should have a 38DGAS but the Scimitar throttle linkage is slightly different to the Ford linkage but is easily swapped over (one nut). You would need to reinstate the water supply to the carburettor as it is water heated which looks to have been changed on your car from the standard setup. The ease of doing this depends on which water heated choke mechanism is fitted to a new carb and how your car is currently piped up.

Thank you guys for your answers.
Phil, I guess you are right, is seems to be a 38DGAS but converted with manual choke.
So, according to you, is it safe to buy a brand new 38DGMS carb like this one : https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Weber-38-DGMS-C ... 3043026473

Do you mean the W spacer? I can supply those from Weber too. You need nothing else apart from some base gaskets (3). The automatic choke comes ready fitted so all you have to do is connect up the water feeds to it.

Yes, that is the W plate, but your car was designed for the 38DGAS, the manual DGMS version is just an aberration for the UK market because we are daft like that. I can certainly supply a DGMS but be aware that many of my customers who buy DGMS come back and tell me that they regretted the decision and would have preferred the correct DGAS model.

interesting ... what kind of issues with the DGMS ?
I'm sure I don't want to buy a DGAS and convert it to manual choke
And I'm not sure I want an automatic choke too ...

It's your car and your choice, I am just trying to guide you!

Manual choke is a pain in use, you have to play tunes on it and often try to retract it too early which leads to stalling. Even worse is forgetting it is set and washing the oil from the cylinder bores with excess fuel. It was never a standard Scimitar fitment, the auto choke just does what it is meant to do without fuss and with the best performance.

Manual conversions are typically done by those who refuse to repair or replace a worn out auto choke and think that will be a cure!
