Vacuum gague readings

Post by Steve_S » Fri Jun 15, 2018 8:06 pm

Hi guys any body got a vacuum gauge fitted to there car ? If so could you tell me the reading at tick over (800 rpm) in inches of mercury please. I know normally it should be between 17 and 22 just want to get an over view of other Essex v6 engines vacuum as mine would appear to be low pointing at cam timing but the few checks iv done up to now would indicate all is as it should be.
Thanks

Steve

Vacuum gague readings

On most of my cars past and present I’ve never been able to get a manifold vacuum reading over 15” unless I advance the ignition ridiculous amounts (25 + degrees BTDC). Niether have I ever been able to get a really steady needle, and it normally flutters to a greater or lesser extent.
If this had been on just one car I’d assume there was a fault, but as it’s been on lots of cars I just accept this and take the reading for that particular vehicle, note in the front of the Haynes manual and periodically check it hasn’t deviated from this.
On my 5a with fast road cam the gauge needle flutters around the 12/13” mark.

My engine is in very good order has not done many miles (originally it was a essex based generator set) when purchased it was running on LPG and the oil was perfect (so maybe wear and tear could account for the lower readings)
readings are at 750 rpm
check the guage i have one that is inacurate ( i checked miine using a set of four that i have for tuning multiple carbs)
