All of the above makes sense, but is a very tricky concept to get your head around by reading words : in the same way someone telling you how a differential works makes no sense.

Play with http://www.willtheyfit.com to get some sense of it.

Thanks Jim, can you just put 8" on the back and 7" on the front so it clears the suspension, or get the front two wheel rim reduced (opposite to banding) on the rim going inwards ? ( on the front)

My Quest for Alternate Wheel Rims

Post by mark rudder » Fri May 25, 2018 8:43 am

Hi all, Another Mark from down-under.
I've read most of the posts above, my 6B has standard Wolfrace 14x6 wheels, looking to fit 15x7 wheels that I can order in offsets -5 to +10
(Performance Charger, google' Performance Superlite' ) locally using 205/75/15 tyres to,
a increase gearing about 5-6%
b correct an optimistic speedo,
c fill the wheel arches a bit,
d freshen up the car,
e maintain the factory wheel look,
The increase in ride height is no issue.
Question, if I use -3 offset, ( like the standard Wolfrace) to retain the standard steering geometery, will I foul the suspension or guards?
If so what offset would you suggest? as the other Mark said spacers are a no no here. Any ideas welcome.

Thanks, Mark.

The same -3 offset on wheels that are an inch wider means you have 1/2” extra wheel either side - so, yes it will foul the suspension.

Use something like www.willtheyfit.com to calculate clearance.

Edit, I’ve just read the first post and Mark describes it much better - and Daryl linked willtheyfit above.

It also depends on the design of the rim edge. If there's a chunky edge, you need to "add" more clearance (positive offset); a slimline rim edge will allow you to run a bit less offset.

Going up to 15" rims gives you (by design) a little more clearance against the wishbone.

My suspicion is going to 6.5Jx15 and ET+3 will be OK and be fine to run 205 section tyres.

My Quest for Alternate Wheel Rims

Mark, again.
6.5x15 wheels at around -5 to +5 offset are very hard to find & I want to retain the Wolfrace style, it would be a good size though.
I have the car on ramps to maintain suspension loads on & have 15mm clearance top ball joint to tyre.
Do I loose clearance to the ball joint on steering lock? Using the suggested calculator 15x7 with 205x75x15 tyres & -5 offset adds 11mm to the
inset, i.e. leaving 4mm clearance, is this to close for comfort? The extra -2mm offset is very close to factory geometry & I suspect have
little effect on the car, -5 is the max neg offset I can order. I note & can see the slight design clearance gain with 15s but didn't
include it in my measures. Queensland Marks description is excellent but I wish to maintain a factory look & -10 offset sticks out (poke)
to far for my taste & will affect the geometry to much.
Hey & thanks for the advice, no one has even seen a 6B GTE here. Still very new to the forum, hope I'm keeping within the guidelines.
Thanks, Mark.

Yes you lose clearance on lock - check it on bump, rebound and lock.

In the left hand pane below his forum name is the “contact” bubble. Click that and you will get the private message icon. Click on that and it will take you to the compose message page with the recipient auto-completed. Some users will have other options in the bubble (such as email) but Mark doesn’t.

If you want to PM someone about a specific post, click on their username in the left hand pane and an options list should appear. In there you will see “reply in PM” which will send them a private message (quoting the post you were in).

One of the other options in the username options list is “go to profile” this page tells you a little about the user (whatever they have chosen to enter in their), when they were last logged in, how to contact them, how to find all of their posts, etc.

Still doing homework on this. Spoke to Dunbar58 very helpful.

Can anyone give me an accurate measure top ball joint/ wish bone to rim clearance for a 15 x 7 wheel 205 x 70 or 65 tyre
with a known offset, please quote your offset so I can calculate my clearance. Measured steering straight ahead
standing on the ground.

17mm on my 15x7 Wolfrace with 205/60R15 Avon ZV5 fitted.

The tyre will rub on the ARB unless I adjust the trunnions stops.

Offset is 0.125” (3.2mm) and I have 10mm spacers fitted.
