You're right, and don't forget that by that time things were in decline as well, compared to their peak. It's something I freely admit to having a bit of a "bee in my bonnet" about, that people are all too often inclined, these days, to think of Reliant as though they were scraping around, cobbling together a few cars from bits scavenged from other maker's parts bins, which I feel does them an injustice.

My 6a chassis number ends in 3499 but registered in May 19 1978, so am I right in saying it was manufactured in 1977 so can I claim my free road tax at the post office ? :D

You could try, and I hope you have better luck than I did with Kirsty, which was built in 1986, but registered in 1988. DVLA just wouldn't wear it; for them date of first registration rules, OK?

Hi Dave ........I thought that might be the case , I don't have too long before I can go in May and try then :D I am not having much luck with the DVLA at the moment , bought an old motorbike in bits from a friend who had had it 35yrs and filled change of ownership in for them to refuse me a log book until the bike is built up

It seems that a year or two ago, they stopped correcting the huge number of incorrect date of manufacture on the DVLA database. There was a poor explanation of why they couldn't do it (in an FBVHC item IIRC) which failed to recognise that they'd already changed thousands since the Historic VED was first started.

You were lucky they refused to issue a V5C for the motorbike, I heard a story recently from someone who had similar problems with a Triumph Herald that he was going to strip and use for a kit car (full running gear, so original reg). On inspection (automatic requirement as it hadn't been road registered for years) it was missing a few minor bits (as dragged out of a garage) so the company (SGS) that came to inspect it on behalf of DVSA decided that it would need a Q reg!!! He had to fight them to get a retest.

You don't need to approximate the build date from the last 4 digits of the chassis number (VIN), the two characters at the beginning give you the actual year and month of build. So if your chassis number starts with, say, 7K, your car was built in October 1977. (note that "I" is not used in the month identifier, to avoid confusion).
However, just because the data is there, doesn't mean DVLA will act on it, as the others have said....

5429 was the first 6b Jeff - 5486 was the last of the 30 6a that are dotted around Dec 79.
5493 was the last 6b built in 79 before all GTE production was halted for 5 months to build the first batch of 340 GTC
That is correct, Ian - yours is a 6a which pre-dates the first 6b/2.8 by 173 cars. It was just sitting around for about 18 months somewhere while before being registered, that's all.

So mine starts with 8B - which means it was built February 78, making it over 40 years old.

I'm not really clued up on the whole tax free thing - does this mean it's been eligible since February, or do I have to wait until August (it was registered in August 78).

Cheers,

Mike.

My SE6 was registered in March 1976 but I couldn't get historic road tax until April last year. I would assume by that you wont be able to apply for Historic tax until April 1919.

Thanks Terry - I guess if the car has to be at the end of its 40th year, then that would make sense.

Cheers,

Mike.
