Auto to Manual

Post by Skyedriver » Tue Apr 23, 2019 8:48 pm

Planning to go look at a GTC in the next few days.
It's been converted at some point from an auto to a manual gearbox. 5 speed non O/D.
One thing that has sparked a Q is the rear axle. I know on the Triumph Stag, the rear diff ratio on an auto is different from on the manual. For any given road speed, the engine speed is higher.
Is that the same on the GTC?
Which 5 speed box would have been used? Not the Ford Type 9 surely?
Thanks in advance?

Auto to Manual

As far as I know there is only one axle quoted for the 2.8 engined cars. Probably the type 9 box.

All the cologne engine cars used the same diff ratio no matter what the gearbox.

The 5 speed box that has been fitted is unlikely to be anything other then a type 9.

Ignoring torque converter slippage, the auto will only achieve 1:1 (no over driven gear) so yes rpm will be higher for a given road speed when compared to OD or 5th assuming the same diff ratio.

Almost certainly a type 9.

The gearbox ratios aren’t great but axle ratios are the same manual/auto on the 6/6a/6b/GTC.

I had a type 9 on a 2.9i GTC and first gear was almost redundant.

The A4LD auto is great on the 2.8 and top gear is 0.75:1

So can I assume that with a virtually unnecessary 1st gear that 5th is like a 4th gear ratio as a car that was a manual from the start would have had a different gearbox with overdrive?
I suppose going to 15" wheels would improve things.
Could be the reason it hasn't sold so far.

Thanks for that comparison Jim.
Low 1st , 2nd & 3rd higher, 4th identical and top a little lower.
Not sure where that leaves me.
The car does seem to be a bit of a bitza due to the conversion but looks sound in the photos. Lacking in documented history, only heresay.

It’s not a 2.9i is it?

I think a type 9 on the 2.8 will be perfectly usable? We’re a little spoilt with great ratios on the J type overdrive and bags of torque to fill any gaps.

You could also fit a 3.07 or 3.31 diff from an earlier car?

Not a 2.9i, it looks like a Cologne engine (apparently) with a carb on the top. Not that I'me expert on V6 Fords. My limit is the old crossflow!

looks like the standard cologne with the Weber conversion, a float switch on the expansion tank and an adjustable fan sensor.

Type 9 was fine in my similarly equiped 6b to be honest, though T9's getting bloody pricey these days, look at a 5 speed Mazda box and adaptor plate instead

I’m thinking going the Mazda gearbox route on my 6b when I convert it to manual . I was talking to a guy at a car show last weekend and he has a 6 speed box on his rover v8 Capri. It has put the idea into my head.
