Cologne engine and box

Postby ronnie » Wed Mar 15, 2017 7:01 pm

Ready for wiring
Oil primed
New radiator to fit
BIG alternator fitted
Ugly and heavy belt tensioner removed

Image

Much easier to fit the engine and box as a unit.
I've dropped in other Scimitar engines and struggled to fit the box with that #### spacer plate
That spacer plate causes problems with the removal of the sump insitu.

Getting closer.......to fire up.

The cologne is much easier to remove/install than the Essex but not sure what spacer plate you mean? Blanking plate at the bottom of the Bellhousing?

That thin spacer 1-piece plate behind the flywheel - or dust shield
Why not have it in 2 parts so you can easily get the sump pan off

I didn't think that obstructed the sump? Many Ford engines have similar - the CVH has 3 or 4 designs, some single piece and others two piece but you have to remove the starter to drop it IIRC?

Obstruct.......it certainly does. There are a couple of bulges stamped in the lower part (the bit that is removable on the 6a). The rear oil seal housing sticks out backwards from the sump and catches on the bulges. If you don't know this then it seems a mystery as to what is stopping the sump coming down any further than the first little bit. My cure......grit teeth and heave sump off, then repaint scratched plate with indestructable-you-cant-scratch me paint before re-fitting sump.
As others have said - while engine/gearbox separated take hacksaw to plate to make it 2 piece so that bottom bit can come off by only having to take off lower bolts.

Ronnie........ugly tensioner removed?

1. How do you tension the power steering belt?
2. How have you routed that belt to avoid the other pulley?

Or rather the bracket you've got at the top shoud be at the bottom or you won't be able to change plug 1, it's difficult enough as it is, bloomin impossible the way you've got it, and as Dennis said, you've no tensioner for the PS pump belt fitted, also your rocker covers on wrong side as well, PCV is usually on the driver side and goes into the carb spacer from memory where you've got it is where the servo hose goes, will the bonnet close with oil filler there?
Bonnet bracker the black bit, on back to front I think as well as the upstand is where the safety latch catches

Rocker covers are correct for a Cologne.

Oh Ye of little faith........

Tensioner was not fitted on those early install photos as I was still to buy a belt.

The tensioner (new photo)is on a hinged bracket and has several hole positions for different length of belts. I used the existing tensioner pulley and a homemade swinging bracket and yes - the belts all clear.

Don't panic- No1 spark plug is easier to see than what was there before....what do you think?

and YES - that spacer plate is a problem folks when removing that sump.

Not happy with top hose and I might just route it as before
Bonnet catch - guilty as charged. well spotted

Do you think it is in a better position way up high on the drivers side on this 1985 GTE ?
My 1980 GTC has the oil filler as ScimmyMike mentions.

Did they start using the 2.8 Capri covers on later cars?

ScimmyMike.......I have 3 different valve covers covers on my Cologne engined Scimitars

Still think it is 'bloomin impossible'
I can see the original bracket hinders access to No1 spark plug

EDIT..1 week after -ve comment was made that it has not been withdrawn after looking at the evidence.
I must therefore conclude that it is easier to gain access to No1 Spark Plug (smiley face)
