System Crash - Wed 13 Sept 2017

Post by Ian » Fri Sep 15, 2017 5:15 pm

I am intending to run a diagnostic and repair utility on the server this evening to see if it can find anything wrong. It is very greedy on server resources though, so response may slow down considerably and some actions may fail. There is also an outside chance that it could bring the server down again. I can't find the culprit in the log files so this is my next chance to detect it.

I'm planning to start it at around 11:00 and will monitor it as it runs so will quickly respond if the system crashes.

Wish me luck!

Get the coffee brewed - starting at 2300 is greatly appreciated, so I'll go to bed early and stay offline.
Goo luck.

Well, it wasn't a hacking attack, thank goodness. It appears to be a bug right in the Linux Kernel of the system. A very low level software problem. Once I'd seen a couple of warnings in the diagnostics I ran tonight it pointed me in the direction of others who have experienced the same or similar problems. I have to perform a kernel upgrade to get rid of this bug and that will have to be another day as its complex and I'm too tired. There will be a short downtime for this but I'll give notice of when I intend to do it. In the meantime I've tweaked some configuration options that should mean that the bug is less likely to manifest itself in a system crash. I need a fingers-crossed smilie emoticon!

It took me a while to pluck up the courage and get round to the necessary Linux Kernel upgrade on our server, but I've done it today. There were a few short interruptions to normal service. I hope no-one was very inconvenienced. The system should now be a bit more stable.
