Yes I know you can do that, but you don't want to have to re-size the display simply in order to select a thread, then resize it back again when you return, so that you can see the whole list again....
Ah - is that an android thing? If I enlarge a screen to click on an icon, the new screen comes up normal size (on my iPad/iPhone). I do it on most pages when I'm using my phone as my fingers are so fat :D
Not sure if it's an O/S thing or a browser thing, but using my standard (on mobile) combination of Firefox/Android, the sequence is like this:

you get the "View Unread" list,
enlarge it to the size you want, to hit the button,
select the post, new window opens up at normal size,
read the post at normal size,
exit,
takes you back to the list in the same size as you left it (i.e. enlarged in this case). This means that to see the whole list (if it contains a number of items) you either have to re-zoom it out, or refresh it.

I've just tried it with the default browser as well as Firefox, and that's the same.
I enlarge to use the quick links >unread posts which opens the list in normal size. I enlarge that so I can hit the red page (go to first unread post) which opens in normal size. Assuming you don't reply to that post, when you go back to the unread posts list, it's enlarged ready to select the next unread post - perfect?

Assuming you read the posts in order, and simply pick the next - I don't.
If there's a long list, I pick the ones I'm more likely to be able to contribute to or am more interested in, first.

Ah, you need to try the single finger scroll :-)

But when the list is still in it's enlarged view, I can't see the whole of the post subject header at once, only one end of it.....

Anyway, the fact that we are even having this discussion shows that my basic point was correct, and you agree with me - that the little red icon is simply too small. If it was bigger, there would be no need for all this zooming - the zooming isn't the solution, it's just a symptom of the problem

I can zoom it to view 6 posts full width including last post (and I think your screen is bigger?) - simply scrolling down gets sight of the whole list?

Zooming isn't just the solution, it's a design consideration nowadays - you can't make everything bigger by default, that's the whole reason we have the function :D

I'm not asking for everything bigger, just the little red pip. I'd willingly lose a tiny bit off one of the other screen elements to achieve a more balanced, functionally effective design. After all, the primary objective of the "view unread" list, is to allow you to view the latest unread post in the thread, so the list layout should facilitate that?

For example, the round Scimitar icons on the left add minimal value to a "View Unread" list, they could easily be downsized or even removed altogether, without making the list any less useful. Or alternatively, if the "Go to the first unread post in the thread" functionality was subsumed into the icons, then that would deliver a major benefit in terms of usability on smaller touchscreens (i.e. phones rather than tablets), without any extra use of screen space. :)

Thanks for the comments. I thought I'd leave it a while before looking. I'll take all comments into consideration before putting a proposal together.

I have to admit I find the homepage on the new system a little odd on my iPhone,
Only the forum has a new style. The front page is as it has been for a long time and it was never designed with mobile use in mind. There is a new version of the homepage and other pages in development and Terry Rickard and myself will be pushing forward with that after ScimFest. The online shop is also scheduled for upgrade and will be more mobile friendly.

Roger, if you mean the little red page icon before the topic name then its not really a problem because the big round scimitar icon takes you the same place.

Well, that's very interesting. I was sure that when I tried it yesterday, it took me to the first post in the thread, not the first unread, but I've just tried it a couple of times today, and it seems to have worked. That's exactly what I was asking for in my last note, so if it's there already, that's great!
Clearly I'm not the only one unaware of this, as I'm sure Jim wouldn't be messing-around unnecessarily zooming to magnify the red icon, if he'd known

Scimitar icon at left...
News to me too! Great!
I always clicked on the little grey "north-east" arrow in right col to see last post in a thread.
This is much better/easier.
Now, how about making it automatically open in a new tab so the list of unread is not lost...

Yes, that applies to all links I think, not sure if it's a simple fix to open links in new tab?
