Pre-Curborough welding help!

Post by RockerPhill » Tue Jul 21, 2015 9:29 am

I'm in a bit of a situation ladies and gents..

I've been working my absolute socks off to get my car done in time for curborough. She's been off the road for 15 years so there's been a fair bit to do.

She's now ready for an MOT, but I KNOW it will fail on welding, as the welding repairs are inadequately finished, and appear to need a little extra doing to them.

I have never welded, nor do I have any idea how to weld, nor do I want to learn on my car right now.. I'd rather someone who knows what they're doing to do it!

My issue is, that my garage can only have my car in for the MOT on the 28th of July. Curborough (my main goal for finishing the car) is on the 13th I believe.

If/when it fails, is there ANYONE in southwales local to Cardiff/Cwmbran/Newport who can weld? I warn now, I don't have much to pay you like the usual rate, but I can manage a little bit!

Thanks guys :) my project thread is "The Se5a Learning Curve".

If nice guys finish last, then that's alright; at least my conscience will be clear at the end.

Reach for the tin of underseal and a 4" brush ?

Otherwise would be happy to help If you were closer!

Haha! Thanks for the sentiment fella', I appreciate it :) as for the under seal, the seat belt anchorages are what need welding, so I want to be as safe as possible :) I've just nipped up to another garage, they've said they can't give me a quote unless they see the car.

Plan of action:

Book in there for an MOT
They assess welding
They've quoted £60 per hour for welding
Fingers crossed they won't fail it on anything else. I'm worried the inlet manifold still isn't on right, and that she'll smoke a bit. Hopefully not though.

Prep is 80% of the job. If you know it will need doing then attack it with gusto till clean metal is found. If you are feeling crafty make up any repair sections.

I had a neighbour who used to bring me various jobs held together with self tappers and the like. Unfortunately his choice of steel wasn't always the best !

William might have the name of a welder in the Cardiff area if that would be of use - he'd been travelling round the country picking up old axles for reconditioning and he has just picked up one from us. He inspected Williams handy-work on ALJ and approved some of it .. other bits will need redoing though.
