New member Introduction

Post by Covpath » Thu May 25, 2017 9:27 am

Hello All

Greetings from Ryton on Dunsmore.

I'm an aging pathologist who's been "talking a good GTE" for about 25 years since being forced to pass over a lovely yellow one due to insufficient funds.

As a massively overpaid and underworked NHS consultant, the time is ripe to fulfill the dream. :D

I'm no mechanical whizkid - bodywork means something else in my domain - and so am looking for a reasonably well sorted SE5 with O/D.

I'd be grateful for any leads. I've read (but not understood fully) the guide to buying a secondhand Scimitar and joined the Club in anticipation of ownership/custodianship.

Best wishes
Paul

Welcome, Paul :D

Dare I ask what your theoretical budget is and what sort of condition you are after? I don't have one for sale but it might help when cars appear for sale.

Welcome to the Club.
Have a look at a few cars first to relate the buying guides to the metal and plastic.
They used to have a tidy 5a in the Coventry transport museum but I haven't seen it there since the revamp so maybe it is in alternative storage. There's also one at the Gaydon museum, I think. If you travel further afield to Kettering there is the specialist QRG who often have cars being rebuilt from the chassis up.

Welcome Paul

Hopefully the right car will pop up soon. Have you got your heart set on a 5 or would you consider a 5a?, I'm a big fan of the 5 interior over the 5a interior. But that is just personal taste.

Welcome Paul. My mind is awash with connotations of your occupation and the fact that many scimitars and their owners are close to being customers of yours

Usual caveats apply, but the best you can afford. Bodywork doesn't rot like tin cars but repainting them or even blowing damaged in, is laborious and a specialist job, whereas as the mechanical gubbins are pretty basic so most 'old school' mechanics will be able to work on them for you.

Good luck with the hunt :-)

Having had a PM from Paul (and it's not the done thing to reveal the detail), he's looking at the top end cars (dare I say one you could probably drive into the concours with) - even with SE5 prices as they are.

Dear All
I'm overwhelmed by all your welcomes.
Having little practical skill (but willing to learn) I'll need to spend a bit more up front rather than buying to restore. It doesn't need to be perfect as I'm looking forward to carrying out small jobs under guidance.
I'd be happy with a 5 or 5A (for no clearly defined reason other than I love the shape and its slightly smaller overall size). My other toy is a 2002 Lotus Elise so a GTE will seem like acres of inside space in comparison.
Once again thanks for the friendly welcome and I look forward to meeting you all at some point.
best wishes
Paul
