Jensen? Scimitar!

Post by Jens » Sat Sep 17, 2016 10:09 pm

A keen Jensen owner for decades I have now done something weird and fulfilled one of my teenage dreams: I bought a Scimitar.

You may recall BME 57H was for sale with Bonhams at Beaulieu some days ago. She is my car now.

I am living in Dresden in Germany and I am driving British Classics for more than 30 years. It all started with a rubber bumber MGB, later with my first Jensen, a C-V8 MkIII, followed by a 541 S, a FF, a Jensen Healey and a Jensen GT. I hope it is not forbidden to use the J-word here and I promise I will never do anymore outside this thread.

I also drive a Porsche 911 C2 (964) for almost 20 years now (will not mention the P-word too anymore).

So, it is an obviously well known (just saw the Lancaster insurance ad) SE5, very nice drive but it let me down right after the first 30 miles somewhere on the A27, a few miles from Goodwood (see BME thread in "Cars for sale"). After all we made it to Dresden in the far east of Germany and I will register the car here within the next days.

Looking forward to have some fruitful discussions here on this forum.

Cheers,
Jens

There are a few Scimitars in Germany - we had the club international in Aachen in June. We even had a Porsche test driver who owned one - says a lot about Scimitars I think. Is it still Spargel time in Dresden - it was last time we were over there.

Hi Peter,

Spargel (white asparagus) time is long over, it is a spring vegetable, harvesting normally begins in April and ends in June.

Let me know when you're around.

Who is the guy to talk to regarding members in Germany?

Welcome Jens :D

What a fantastic collection of Jensen you have !
You'll find out that the J word is not totally taboo here as there are a number us who would fancy an Interceptor,
my dream car in the lot would be the 541 though
Congratulations on adding a Scimitar to your collection

Not sure about a german club ... there seems to be a section RSOCG mentioned on Carsablanca:
http://www.carsablanca.de/Oldtimer-Club ... many-rsocg
and there appears to be a few old webpages talking about a german club, but it may have disappeared otherwise
I am sure it would be listed under the International menu of Scimitar Web (...)

Maybe you should ask Jörg ( landschrabbler on this forum ) who is our german member at Scimitar France

Happy motoring with the Scimi 8)
Cheers,
Fred

This may not be the correct thread to use, (if not perhaps a Mod could move it) but while we are talking about Jensens I would just like to record the fact that my lifelong buddy Chris Pulley died last week - so I imagine his 541R will be up for sale. Its a bit early to be approaching the family, and it's quite possible they might decide to keep it; but if I hear anything I will post a notice on here.

Thank you very much for the warm welcome. Looks like this is a similar active bunch as the JOC.

Jensen started with the glassfibre bodies in 1954 (541) and kept them in production until 1966 (C-V8 Mk III). As someone working with glassfibre and carbonfibre a Scimitar was the logical addition to collection. And I wanted to have an early GTE.

As a newbie in all things Reliant I have joined the club yesterday and would like to ask a few questions regarding production and survival figures.

BME 57H was build in 1970. How many of the SE5 GTEs were build, from when to when and are there any figures about survivors?

Which books (literature, handbooks, etc ...) can you recommend? I've already ordered the workshop manual from the shop, any useful additions?

Here is the car 10 days ago on the A27:

Welcome. That looks like a really good buy.

I'd recommend getting a copy of Don Pither's book 'The Scimitar and its Forebears' which gives an almost totally accurate history of the cars, including production numbers. Available from the Club shop.

I'd second that. Don Pither's book has still not really been bettered for its coverage of the Scimitar production story. There may be a few subtle areas where the figures have been refined slightly, but it's still, in the main, a good guide :)

Welcome Jens, I only joined a couple of days ago, and I also only just seen purchased my first Scimitar (four days ago). It's a shame we hadn'the both joined earlier... I live close to where you broke down, and I have a spare facet fuel pump we could have dropped in (i'm assuming the culprit in the picture is the pump).

Dear Tim,

yes it was the fuel pump and the very nice but very late RAC bloke called a friend and found a pump. We installed it on the A27 and the car was running as if nothing had happened.

Pity I didn't know you're around ...

Anyway, new headlights and a hazard warning switch will be here tomorrow and then it's TÜV (MOT) time ... keep your fingers crossed.
