Small sports/metro calipers

Post by scimjim » Sat Dec 22, 2018 8:31 pm

Anyone have a pair of new/refurbished calipers (solid or vented disc type) they’re not planning to use, before I start calling the traders?

Yea - 90 ish quid on eBay for non-vented or I could get mine refurbished by big red for about the same, or support our traders and buy refurbed for 100 quid or so - or get wilwoods for 110 or so - just thought I’d try here first :D

Jim I have a few "Blanks" with New seals and SS pistons fitted ready for re assembly with or without the vented spacers.

What Exactly do you need?.

I can probably make a set of each.

Will go to the emporium and pull out what I have

Big red do do a lovely job.... And you'll get stainless pistons.

Someone told me they weren't taking on the metro calipers due to the nipples tendency to shear.

Was just going to mention Mark's recent offer of quality SS pistons. But figured Jim wanted a straight fit caliper for convenience.

RR, Phil wrote "Someone told me they weren't taking on the metro calipers due to the nipples tendency to shear.

Every one of the units I bought had at least One sheared nipple.

Right pain int arse to fix, because of the casting shape it`s nearly impossible to hold them to get them into the miller to accurately drill out and replace them.
I did think about going up a size but time is money and when there are Three per caliper it comes out an an extra £30 which has to be paid for.
And a purchaser would not really like the extra charge.

I had to drill one out of my calipers and go up to 8mm. Luckily the others were ok. 😅 The ones on the car have all sheared off so I had to source replacements. I paid £50 for a pair but I’ve rebuilt them with stainless pistons (thanks Mark), seals and stainless bleed nipples. They look the part now 😁

Oh yes, do I need to fit the piece of steel under the retaining pins? Mine were missing on one calipers and I can’t find them for sale on their own.

I probably have a dozen calipers for refurb with at least one sheared nipple in each. I’ve also got a dozen or so good standard discs that just need a polish on the lathe.

Wilwoods of course will need new discs and/or spacers?

Ideally though, I have a pair of vented discs on the shelf, so I’d like a set of metro calipers for them if you could PM me a price please Mark?

Fitting kits are GBK1017 (non-vented) and GBK1025 for vented.

I have 2 sets, GBK1025 and Quinton Hazel BFK766 which is the same part. Obviously neither fit my calipers but one set of split pins do!

I have probably 4 pairs with the nipples out for refurb, my technique for removal is clout then with a lump hammer before trying to undo.

That said I also had a half dozen that went for scrap with one or more sheared.
