Barons 11 December 2018 SE4 - £12K!!

Post by Scimher » Fri Dec 14, 2018 10:17 am

So Barons were pretty much spot-on with their guide price...Looks a lovely car & probably well-bought at the price. Comments about the chassis reminded me that, many years ago, I was interested in a white 'Straight Six' that was for sale at £300 - (yes, I'm going back a bit & to put it in perspective, it was probably a year or two before I was offered an on-the-road DB5 for 3.5k!!...) It was up-&-running but I was told, I think by my brother, that the chassis was 'shot' so I never took it any further. Mind you, the car was in Buxton, Derbys. & the winters up there, certainly in those days, necessitated quarry loads of salt each year which put paid to many vehicles, seemingly before their time!

If I had to take a guess I would say that the car wouldn't have been much above 15yrs. old at the time - so what I'm saying, I guess, is that if the car has survived this long then the chassis probably doesn't have too many problems...

Even with the buyer's commission it is still 10grand(+?) less than a half-decent RS2000 Mk.2!!... :w

If you come accross any more DB5 or DB6 deals I will go halfs with you :D them were the days! I think the buyer pays a premium of 10% on the hammer price of each vehicle, would that bring it up to £13,750 for the purchasor?

minus sellers fees of 5% on hammer price and £120 or £180 advertising fee.

Us old uns have all got memories of how cheap certain classics used to be...
My personal one is that back in the early sixties as a young teenager I used to wander around a local large used car dealer, which would be called a car supermarket now.
I usually admired the E types, say 3 years old and priced at just over £1k...however one day something very strange and lhd caught my eye.
It seemed rather old,1955 to be exact, and had funny doors...and it had the seemingly very steep price of about £2.5k

It was a Merc 300SL "gullwing"...I believe they are about £1.5m now.
Needless to say I failed to persuade my dad to buy it!

The problem was £2.5k would have bought a house in those days - my late Father bought a brand new bungalow in a desirable Derbyshire village for £4.5k in the early sixties......& 3.5k was a helluva lot of dosh (well, to me: anyhow, it was academic, I just hadn't got it... ) in the early eighties...

To be honest I never made any serious attempt to get my Dad to buy that old Merc...although I tried hard and failed to get him to have a Jag mk2 3.8 to replace our old Rover 75.

It was at this same dealer a year or two later that I saw the ideal car my uncle was looking for,a one year old Sunbeam Rapier.
It was gold in colour with 10k miles on the clock.
When the salesman brought it to demonstrate it to my uncle a week later it had only 5k miles recorded. He didn't buy it!

That must have brought on my lifelong distrust of motor traders,as demonstrated earlier!
