'J' reg 5a for sale

Post by ScimiTom » Mon May 20, 2019 11:07 pm

I just spotted this for sale on eBay:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/323811209753?ul_noapp=true

As far as I can tell this is a genuine 5a, not a 5. Were there really 'J' reg 'SE5a's? I always thought my 'K' reg 5a was about as early as you can get.

'J' reg 5a for sale

Yes, so all the signs are there - 5a 'Scimitar' lettering, 5a black headlight surrounds, 5a Scimitar side badges, 5a interior... So what's the deal with the 'J' reg, I wonder? Personal plate?

Of course it could be someone who’s put a 5a body into a 5 chassis (it has happened a few times) but would be prudent to check the stamped number on the chassis matches the (easily changeable) plate on the body if anyone was considering purchasing.

If it was a private plate, then this would still show the date of registration being applicable to a 5a.

From the MoT check site:
Date registered
25 June 1971

So it’s the chassis (number) of an SE5.
