eBay ID scams

Post by scimjim » Mon Apr 09, 2012 11:30 am

the retro-rides board has a very active group on the lookout for stolen cars and eBay ringing scams (usually tax exempt VIN/Chassis plates etc)

would it be an idea to make this link and info a sticky in our eBay section?

copied from: http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.c ... 272&page=1

eBay do action reports about listings of this nature, but unfortunately not all of the time.

In fact, they have specific areas in the 'Report' section to do it. Simply choose Report Item>Reason for report: eBay Motors>Detailed Reason: Prohibited [banned] Items>Additional Information: Seller is offering registration papers without vehicle OR Vehicle Identification Number [VIN] plates.

I work with a bunch of guys on Pistonheads to monitor and report such listings, and in a majority of the cases, we get eBay to pull the listings, or have a 'gentle' word to the seller that we've reported the listing to the authorities, and they pull it themselves.

There is a specific devision of the Police force who tackle vehicle crime, AVCIS [ACPO Vehicle Crime Information Service] and I forward all 'ringing' kits found on eBay to them.

www.AVCIS.police.uk

The e-mail address to use is: vehiclefraud@avcis.pnn.police.uk

...

Could I please encourage people to post any 'ringing' kits they see on eBay on here, the more people looking, the more we find, the more we can report.

Be aware that anyone selling a chassis or a complete monocoque [not rusty and in a carrier bag] with a Logbook or VIN plates is not technically breaking the law, so there's nothing that can be done about those particular listings, and they could well be genuine.

.....

Be sure to send them a weblink to the auction, I also include the body of the text and the eBay seller's ID, in case eBay pull the ad before AVCIS have had a chance to see
it.

.....

I've been asked by one of the DI at AVCIS to advise that the most relevant e-mail address to send 'ringing kit' adverts to is:-

intel@avcis.pnn.police.uk

.....

The old buff logbooks are fine, but it is illegal to sell the newer V5/V5C as they remain the property of the DVLA. (later post suggests that the buff books can also be a bit of a grey area)

it's not illegal to sell vin plates and number plates 'for display purposes'.

These muppets on retro rides have caused a lot of trouble for people selling chassis' (particularly landrover) and beetle floor pans. They are only interested in furthering their own credibility with other forum members. They often make statements that could land them in court, and lead to the closing of the forum. This is the reason why the thread was locked.

agreed - but most of the time that's a cover for ringing - I don't know many people with picture frames full of VIN plates.

AFAIK they didn't report anyone genuinely selling a chassis (as explained above).

Ignoring the ringing of stolen cars with legit VIN plates, the main reason I posted it was to raise awareness of ringing with tax exempt plates. If it gets out of hand, the simplest way to stop it (and raise some money at the same time) is to bin the Historic Class of VED.

they did report people selling chassis' and boasted about it on the thread, but moderators removed these boasts, and the links and comments encouraging others to report the ebay auctions.

okay - well it's been tidied up now and in conjunction with what I've written above, I don't think there's any reason to be negative is there?

there is every reason to be negative jim, these idiots have caused several ebay sellers to loose their selling abilities on ebay by reporting things as 'illegal' that are legitimate.

Well complain on retro-rides then.

I obviously meant there's no need to be negative about this thread. I'm confident our forum is better moderated than R-R.

Personally I have very little respect for ebay these days; add in a few "keyboard warriors" and it does make a farce of what sometimes is a genuine car/part/sale - even we have been guilty of it.

I'll leave everyone to make up their own mind on the subject, please?
