oilrag that`s a Cologne type, you can tell by the Top TWO boltholes, they are higher and closer together than Essex.
Andy, I have One unknown Essex box, its still attached to the Seized engine if your stuck.

I have a good one in my garage. Well, it was a good one as it drove very well etc etc until I removed it and didn't look properly under the car before I removed the bell housing. Twat ! I am so used to the ford bell housings coming away from the gearboxes on manuals and it was dark when I was doing this one, the car wasn't quite high enough so I thought, lets take the bell housing off.

Anyway, anyone who has been there will know what happened next and now i have very good gearbox probably if its put back together again carefully. This was a couple of years ago and I decided to ignore it for a while in case it either vanished or fixed itself. Its still there though so if anyone wants to arrange to collect it then I would be happy to pass it on as it has to be useful to someone who can either put it back together again or make a good one out of two.

Yes I know exactly what happens! I did it myself trying to swap Cologne to Essex! It is fine if you leave the input shaft in and keep it under pressure. If you don't, the clutch pack floats about on its own, meaning an almost full strip. I still have mine gathering sticky dust under the shelving! However I am going to use the valve block from it to swap. Hopefully that will sort it as long as the gear train is OK. The box appears to have been run low on oil for some time, so we will see. I would really prefer NOT to have to swap it out, with the state of my back currently. ;-)

Well the valve block has been swapped. The sump removal was interesting, lots of blackness and a valve body bolt floating around in the bottom! Some of the others were loose so it wouldn't have been very happy. I took the car out earllier and it seems better but I need to do a more extensive test before giving it a clean bill of health. I have an idea that the forward clutch pack may have seen better days, going by the blackness.

Well the gearbox although better is not perfect, so it looks like a stuffed forward clutch pack. I think that the sensible thing to do is to fit a known perfect gearbox, so the intention is to remove this one with its torque converter and get them professionally rebuilt. It's expensive, but cheaper than my time to keep swapping unknown boxes in and out, not to mention the irritation factor for a future owner.

I could do it myself, but by the time I have got all the bits and spent the time required, I could have earned the value of the job with customer work!

I know what you mean, its all down to cost sometimes and the price of bits plus auto boxes can be a bit worrying when they fall apart. I have been their recently with my v8 merc. It now goes backward often when you ask it too. Every since I bought it, the car has only gone backwards for the first 30 sec after turning it on. not particularly useful as its huge. The seal that sorted it cost 2.80 from merc but taking it all apart and being happy to put it all back in and hope that it would work, that was another thing.

If anyone wants my C3 gearbox, as described above, to get it sorted and use then they only need to contact me and arrange collection. I would prefer it to be useful rather than taken to be weighed in which is probably what I will do eventually with it.
