Hi
Are there any SS1 galvanised chassis's available? New or secondhand?

Thanks, Andy.

SS1 galvanised chassis's available?

New - not for many years.

Second hand? That would be the identity of the car to which the chassis applies, so very, very unlikely (unless you find someone breaking a car that received one of the new replacement chassis which wasn’t stamped - as it should have been when fitted).

SS1 galvanised chassis's available?

as phil suggests, this is a serious can of worms, thread on here somewhere.

if you don't mind assuming the donor cars identity, so transfer your good running gear and body panels across to the 'donor' and use that car's identity as long as you get it's V5 ?

SS1 galvanised chassis's available?

Post by Andrewwoey » Fri Oct 13, 2017 8:01 pm

Thanks for your response. I am just looking at options for when i final start my rebuild. I keep hearing "get a galvanized chassis" and just wasn't sure if they were being reproduced. I do understand the V5 and associated issues.

Thanks again for the information.

Andy.

SS1 galvanised chassis's available?

Post by Andrewwoey » Sun Oct 15, 2017 12:28 am

I know i will need to do some repairs to the chassis, but unsure of the full extent until i finally get to strip the car down. What sort of price do the chassis's command when they come available and is there any thing i need to look out for. My car as the 1600 cvh engine so i presume i need to get a chassis that had a 1600 originally fitted?

Thanks, Andy.

The early chassis had mounts for the CVH, later had mounts for CVH, Ti and K series (which use one CVH and one Ti mounting point). There are several early chassis around that have been galvanised either by Reliant or owners.prices vary wildly according to demand and availability. I’ve bought complete galv cars for £250 and paid more than that for a galv chassis alone.

Ed. Beaten To It by Jim.

Location and demand drive the price. Anything really. A fair price would be 200 to 400.

all SS1 chassis will carry the correct mountings for the CVH engine.

but again i would draw your attention back to the fact you can't just swap a chassis from one car to another in the eyes of the DVLA.

They are straightforward to repair. So provided its not totally rotted out i'd just look at repair and proper protection / rust prevention.

Yep, prices stated are for legal swaps - all mine have V5s and VIN plates (except for batmobile) and obviously the original (non-serial numbered) running gear, etc to comply with the 8 point rules your honour :D

SS1 galvanised chassis's available?

Post by Mikeincoleshill » Sun Oct 15, 2017 6:32 pm

My car is chassis no 716 which must be among the last non galvanized. It has picked up galvanized sills along the way along with new out ringers and some patches in the front rail by the exhaust. It still seems in good condition and gets a regular clean and waxoil treatment, in fact it has just passed the mot with no advisories.
I think the sills are still available from QRG and if you have the panels off I would think that repairs can be made fairly easily provided its not too rotten in the centre section.

The sills and jacking points are the worst bits for rust - and to attach new sills properly you need to either remove the body tub or cut sections out of the floor. The trickiest bits are the bits that often get missed because you can’t see them - the top of the rear tube (that the trailing arms mount on) and the top of the front tube that the sill attaches to (mud and water from the Wheels collect here and corrode) and the outboard edges of the A and B posts.

Amazed this one is still available. Cheap for what it is. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RELIANT-SS1-C ... SwXY5ZXVRg

Still would rather the reward of restoring the original chassis if it's just sills and localised repairs.
