I mean, I know you drive it like ya stole it..!!

But the reality is the cars not much more then a tonne, on normal road tyres and with 150bhp(?) there has to be a root cause for all these failures?

What part of the gearbox fails?

This will narrow down the problem

Are you using a high temperature / Branded bearing?

Are the input shaft lengths correct, as I thought the type 5 you had from me was the shorter version which is to be used with the early hydraulic bellhousing it came with?

Thanks for the responses. Spigot bearings are skf. First type 5 box, synchro went on second gear so I put in a type nine box. This ate spigots like no tomorrow with them either welding themselves in the crank or physically falling apart. Eventually it broke a tooth then ate itself.i never opened the box because it will be shrapnel. In the meantime I bought the bgh type 5 from Paul. I had it professionally converted to long input shaft. This also ate Spigots and clutch release bearings. The input shaft circlip (in the gearbox) also failed location wise allowing the shaft to move and so all three gearbox bearings were buggered. So was rebuilt. It’s also ate two clutches. I have an original Sierra 4i clutch in now. The bgh gearbox at the mo sounds like a bag of nails. :D

These are the bearings

when fitting the gearbox each time , how are you pulling the box to the engine ?

Engine in situ,

Sometimes the box just glides on, which is a result, other times I have to use long bolts to pull the box to the engine.

Mikey pulling it in with bolts is a no-no as far as I am aware, you should always try and push it in by hand :)

Should I be using these roller bearings instead if the sealed one? Both are advertised for my gearbox

I think that roller one only fits the inline 4 cylinder engines (Crossflow/Pinto etc)?

Agreed.. if it doesn’t go in by hand, there’s something wrong. Might take some jiggling but even so it should still go in without pulling it into place with bolts.

I suspect your fitting method as already touched upon , could be putting undue stress on the nose of the gearbox and the spiggot bearing.

Have you tried placing the spiggot bearing onto the nose of the gearbox when both are off the car ?

If the bearing is tight , or the input shaft is burred you will struggle to fit the box,
Same applies if the clutch plate is poorly aligned , and the teeth on the input shaft are damaged

Thanks all.

OK clearly fitting is an issue I need to monitor.

Just to reassure I do test fit the spigot bearings and they normally go on the input shaft fine, and I align the clutch using a spare input shaft (from one of my scrap gearboxes har har )
