I have no idea how I got 2 different voltages. I've just tried if with it running (previous voltages where battery only). I took the wires off to look for the markings which where as you said Jim. Wires back on and running I get 6.8 from both sides of the voltage stabiliser.

Correction to my last the instrument side is about 1/2 volt less than the battery side.

I get 6.8 at the fuse box as well. But only the voltage stabiliser supply other fuse point are 12 volts ????????

Your meter won't measure the output accurately enough - any voltage is just an indication that it's not FUBARd. You shouldn't have anything other than battery voltage anywhere on the fuse boxes (or in fact, anywhere apart from fuel level and water temp system).

I had a look to check the ignition light wire on the back of the alternator because the light wasn't coming on and when I check the alternator was only kicking out 12.5 volts. It looked ok but on closer inspection wasn't connected. Now it's on property I have an ignition light and the alternator is kicking out 14 volts.

OK anyone any ideas why I'm getting a reduced voltage?

Right it was a blown fuse. Is it possible to get voltage back thought the wiring. Because that appears to be what happened. I checked again and had 12 volts one side of the fuse and 6 ish the other. Even with the fuse out that wa the case. New fuse in and 12 volts both sides and at the voltage stabiliser.

OK I've been fiddling while typing this and the indicators are working (one bulb is out). Admission time I've been looking at the wrong bit. I've been looking at this thinking it was the flasher unit

Image

Now the indicators are working it's a flasher unit behind the dash that is operating. What is it I'm pointing at? It clicked like a flasher unit as I wiggled wires.

Not surprisingly the fuel and temp gauge are now indicating.

Thank you, got the same colour wires as the flasher unit and my scimitar knowledge is more rusty than I thought :-)

Shouldn't be any purple on the flasher relay - HRW has the only 'proper' relay on a 5.

You are of course right Jim. Tiz just the wiring diagram or my reading of it there is a purple wire. Next stupid question if the HRW is the only relay what is the identical looking one slightly aft of it?

Electrical gurus please expand my electrical knowledge slightly. If the fuse was blow where was the 6 volts I was getting coming from ?

is it part of the remote regulator for the early alternator? what wire colours go to it?

the black box by the wiper motor was part of the alternator regulator. looks like a brown wire going into the outboard relay?

There should be a horn relay. Look for purple/yellow and a headlamp flash relay. both have a purple on terminal C2.

need to amend the SE5 wiring diagram on the NE noggin pages to match the V6 coupe diagram then.

From the depths of my memory there has been some discussion that the early 5s are wired like a coupe. I don't have the black box , I'll confirm what colour wires it had tomorrow.
