Had my new heated screen fitted today :D
First quote (Carglass) was 300+ euro
Another fairly major supplier quoted 100 euro cash - no invoiice :D ( was manned by real people rather than computer operators...)
(Both were visited in person to make sure they knew what the job was).

Am very pleasantly relieved (as per other posts) that the very obvious wiring when the screens are packed in plastic, eg in the living room, is not really noticeable when driving.
Glad to see E registration on it too!
Now looking for 10 min delay relay to connect to rear w/s switch.

Re: TD's Daily Ti thread - Passed APK

Post by td99 » Mon Jan 11, 2016 7:36 pm

APK (Dutch MOT) passed with no problems. Not surprising as it seems I've only driven it 1100 miles in the year!
Interestingly, the left lower ball joint on front suspension has slight (not significant) play and that's the one replaced a year or so ago - the others (originals) are all OK!

Electronic delay circuits for windscreen ordered from China have not arrived, but seller reimbursed me promptly. :)
Might have a go at making one.

I used a timer relay from a London taxi - Reliant connection and it matches the existing relays :-)

Thanks Alan, no need at the moment. Have located a 10 min delay relay, but too mean to pay the 16 quid price + postage.
Actually I think I'll go for an adjustable solution - 10 mins might be rather a long time, especially as I rarely go out early in the mornings any more :-)

I'll look at the one in garage and figure out if it works , which it might (not) as came from scrappy :? , and it's yours for postage cost!

probably the week-end tho as garage is a mess with things all moved from the inspection pit (doubles as a storage unit ! )

I found timer relay circuits for about a fiver on eBay (from China, obviously) - might need an additional space relay though.

Local motor factors near me have them on shelf for £6 that includes relay, button, linking wires and decals for the button.

Yep, me too, ordered a couple more than a month ago but they seem to have got lost in the Xmas post. Have received refund...

Now busy in garage cobbling some transistors together...

Greeny, depending on home-baked solution progress I may be asking you for details of that local supplier.

After much searching in the various boxes of electronics bits and looking up specs of transistors on internet I had some success. Mixture of basic design then trial and error for some component values.

In present form it switches off after a 5 min delay (even if still powered - intending to attach it to rear screen heater switch). Turning that switch off and on again resets circuit for another 5 min delay.

light bulb at lower left corner represents screen heater powered by relay at bottom centre. Blue wire 12V, brown earth. Aluminium bracket holds power trans. to drive relay.

Still have to test it at normal car voltage rather than just battery power and of course, once converted to a neat, compact design, it'll probably work differently (or maybe not at all  )

Well after a lot of faffing about, neat version delay circuit working.
Solder flux residue caused (instabilty) problems until I scrubbed circuit with washing up liquid and hot water! (Dried it afterwards).
7 minute second delay now reliable. Next step build it into a small box...and fit it.
