SS1 1800 CVH Project Steering rack oil or grease

Post by Clueless1 » Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:30 pm

Hi Peter, I have just rebuilt mine and about half a pint of stinky, sludge came out of the old gaiters! Friendly folk on here suggested to put grease in. I coated the rack, liberally with general purpose grease. It now feels much smoother.

Do or do not, there is no try.

Peter I use CV grease as it contains stuff such as graphite, and it`s slightly more water resistant then generic general purpose stuff.
Use a paintbrush and cover everything with it.

SS1 1800 CVH Project Vacuum pipes + more electrics

Post by Peter S » Wed Mar 11, 2020 10:44 am

Next series of dumb questions :?
Seem to have a lot of vacuum pipes and odd outlets around carb and manifold, see below.

Can anybody advice what goes where :?:

Moving onto electricals, are the 2 large relays standard :?: And has anybody a clue what the black switch under the dash on the left hand side is for :?: The other switch is I think to do with the alarm as is the led light and probably goes in the hole in the dash but too small :!:

Is the red button the headlight reset if so what's the white button?

yes the red button next to the interior light is the "headlight reset" the white button, led and rocker switch aren't standard.

Vacuum hoses - the black canister port is labelled "CARB" at a guess - in which case is the vacuum takeoff on the carb base IIRC. The takeoff on the manifold is for the return (bottom pipe) on the breather separator (sits at the front of the rocker cover and plugs into the bottom of the air filter) - usually. -

Yellow and Red relays are the low fuel and low coolant warning modules from memory - they have labels on them (on the underside the way they're mounted) which tell you which is which. I think there's a third black one for low oil too?

Red and yellow Relays are standard low fuel and low coolant.

Edit - beaten to it by Phil. Low oil is a larger unit and on early models with electric dipsticks only.

Empty hole looks in the right place to be choke cable?

Empty hole looks to be the right size for a holder for that LED (carryover from the alarm unit?).

Alternator wiring questions
Does the white red wire go into the centre of the connector plug? Does the choke heater wire go onto the lower bolt?
Does anything to onto the LHS bolt with 2 nuts. Any ideas what the black rubber connector with 2 small black wires is for.

Connector is your rad fan sensor (on the back of the stat housing).

White/red wire sounds like starter solenoid wire?
