as I said, they’re symmetrical so can be plugged in either side.

Could anybody confirm the bolts used on the cross member :?: I think they are M8 but some are loose in the captive nuts and some are very tight. Where they originally 5/16
The other question is why has someone done this (see photo)

seems an odd section to chop out, doesn't line with crank pulley??
and yes M8, although somebody 'might' have fitted a 5/16ths. . . .

SS1 1800 CVH Project Cross member question

Post by scimjim » Fri Feb 21, 2020 3:46 pm

Does it have a non-standard rad fitted? I have some cutouts in G97s front crossmember to remove the sharp edge where silicone pipes run quite close.

SS1 1800 CVH Project Cross member question

Standard rad the only thing I can think of it was to do with some pipe brackets there were 2 on the boot liner by the petrol tank, 2 underneath in the area of the driver's seat and 2 under the front bumper see picture. I've no idea what they are/were for and I'm taking them off. The cut out on the cross member looks recent though no rust :!:

The next query/ advice relates to the alarm system see photo

The unit on the left has vacuum pipes I think - anyone know how it works. The whole thing looks a nightmare  I'm thinking of removing it all but it looks well integrated into the loom so could be a problem. I've no idea if it works I have a remote fob but can't install battery as loads of loose wires around and several extra switches under the dash :w

SS1 1800 CVH Project now the alarm system

Post by scimjim » Sat Feb 22, 2020 5:59 pm

I can’t imagine why an alarm would be connected to the vacuum pipes?

The thing with vacuum pipes - it isn’t a washer pump per chance (or is the pump still connected on the bottom of the bag next to it)?

Any labels or clues on the alarm? Unless there’s a collection of black wires coming out of it, there’s a fair chance you can just unplug it and file it on a shelf somewhere.

Those clips at the front are almost certainly for a neon / led under body lighting tube.

Please don't ask me how I know.

SS1 1800 CVH Project now the alarm system

Well this is embarrassing  Having had a good look in daylight with my glasses on :!: It was shrink wrap with the end of the inside cable removed. It's definitely part of the alarm, but no identification number.
It's not the central locking mechanism  nor the ultrasound sensor, nor the dual zone microwave - I've found the installation booklet  Looking at the options list best guess is a single or triple zone pager to send alerts 400 or 1k range to alert you when the siren is sounding :?

SS1 1800 CVH Project Steering rack oil or grease

Post by Peter S » Wed Feb 26, 2020 8:10 pm

Moving on! The steering rack gaitors are literally in pieces, when I have replaced them, do I fill with oil or grease :?: The remnants look like oil, I've checked the site and there seems to be confusion :!: If oil how much and were do I fill :?: There is talk of 7.5cm3 which is 421cc not 3/4ltr as mentioned, but possibly 750 ml. If grease presumably general purpose on just on the rack :?:
Edited for accuracy!
Thanks for replying below.
