SS1 1800 CVH Project Now a diagram of the cooling system please

Post by Peter S » Sat Jan 25, 2020 9:30 pm

Thanks for that Jim
My concern is the small metal pipe it seems to clash with the thermostat pipe see photo but I guess it can be bent up out of the way :?: Where does the feed out of the inlet manifold go :?:
There's no rush as I'll be doing this after refitting the driver's side electric window, glass and door card and fitting the fuel lines

Yea, just bend that out of the way. The pipe from the inlet manifold goes round the back to that metal pipe.

Originally there would be 2 holes on that mounting tab to determine the height of the pipe for 1300 / 1600 block. Hard to tell from that picture, but it looks like the pipe is mounted on the uppermost hole, with the lower section cut off, or indeed as a SS replacement it may have only had the one mounting hole. Taller 1800 block is of course making the situation worse, but as Jim says, adjust with force as necessary!

I have a feeling the SS versions have a long slot in the bottom rather than holes?

The one on 686 was a slot - and rather substantial IIRC

It's a (fairly short) slot and it's as high as it will go, I should be able to bend it up enough- not tried yet :!:
The other question is : Is there a return from the inlet manifold :?: I can't seem to find anything but there must be something surely.

There's an outlet from the head, which feeds the inlet manifold. I *think* the pipe from the manifold is a return? Is your autochoke water heated or electric?

I’ve updated the pictures on the previous page. There’s no return to/from the inlet manifold stub, it’s a drilling in the head behind the manifold.

Early plumbing setup would simply be pipe 16 which is an outlet from the "heated" intake manifold and is run over the top of the distributor / beside the back edge of the rocker cover joining into the vertical leg of that 3 branch "suction" pipe.

Thanks all it is as Phil A described, not having pulled it apart I didn't realize there's a direct connection with the head.
The choke is electric, it came with 2 spare heating elements :!: The one fitted seems to work but I've set it up with probably not enough tension as no idea what it should be and I'm assuming summer use.

That's fine, my later-type engined car has a carb with a water powered autochoke, so as you seem to have a bit of a mixture, I thought i should just check.

A quick update (more for me!)
As noted above I have not started the cooling system yet as have been rebuilding driver's door, installed the window motor and glass. Works OK with new felt in the rear runner (using direct connection to external battery). Despite
Peter Freeman's wiring diagram unsure how connect to switches. I've best guessed the wires to the mirrors but it looks from the wiring colours the black plugs are on the wrong side and unsure which way round they go :?: There's also an earth wire any ideas where it goes :?: As a large ring on the end, I'm thinking handbrake but without lifting the new carpet unsure.

Had a result with the door lock I was surprised that none of the 10 keys supplied did not work the driver's door lock so took out to investigate. It turned out that due to wear in the key or lock, the key for the passenger door fitted but the tumblers? Fingers? The bits sticking up! Were not retracting fully into the barrel - stopping the lock turning. A quick grind down of the ends and the lock now works, so have 3 ignition, 2 door 1 boot, 1 fuel cap 1 centre box keys + 1 Ford! & 1 newish BL key :?

Also fitted new fuel lines :D to the existing nylon lines, so can now refit the boot liner so giving me more room, then I'll move onto the cooling system I think.

E/W wiring is just plug in - the only bit you can get wrong is the LH and RH.
E/M wiring here
Yes, the earth tag goes to the handbrake bolt.

SS1 1800 CVH Project Update and wiring queries

Post by Peter S » Thu Feb 06, 2020 7:27 pm

Just for the record my car is wired differently to PF's diagram (& the QRG copy I have) The LHS,nearside, passenger side door window has grey/ red & grey/ green wires the RHS offside driver's side window has grey/brown & grey/blue wires to the electric motor.

In other news the driver's door card fouls the door seal ( I had to move the door toward or it fouled the rear wing), so now need to slam door before it was almost! perfect. The foam has now deformed so a bit better.

The picture leads onto next question
All the panels have been resprayed to close match :w Except the windscreen surround (not removable from car) The windscreen has been taken out so it could be painted but became damaged. I have found a close match to the panel paint in a rattle can. Would you recommend respraying the screen surround with a rattle can or put the new screen in and once mobile get it properly painted but only up to the rubber trim :?:
The original is more orange, I prefer the panel colour or could ignore and say they are all like that.

it doesn’t matter which way round they’re fitted.
