G130 YCF my first sprint car

Post by MarkHawkins » Fri Jul 20, 2018 9:13 am

I put Prestones diluted with distilled water in Williams white SS1 - claimed to be universal and suitable for all engines. Also much less toxic that the blue stuff. So far each SS1 I have done cooling system work on has needed the return pipe in the expansion bottle clearing but I've never had to do this on a car with a 5a style expansion tank.

That'll be because the on in the SS1 tank is a tiny steel insert that corrodes and blocks up over time. The one in the 5a tank is both a brass stub and a lot bigger (internal) diameter.

All done with generic silicone pieces. It’s a Golf MK1 GTi rad and fan, but it’s a similar install to original.

Tonight I managed to remove a rounded off sump plug and drain the oil which was not in the best of condition and replace the oil filter (filled with fresh oil and then oil smeared on the seal before fitting) I then took off the pulleys and tin work needed to access the timing belt. I have a new timing belt, water pump and belt tensioner to go on however I am stuck as I cannot undo the bolts holding the tensioner on. Does anyone know what size torx bit I need to remove the tensioner?

Can't be sure of the size, 50 or 55 rings a bell, but I could have that wrong, they're both the same. I have the correct one in my Halfords Pro set, so if you're struggling nip down to Halfords!

Done this job half a dozen time already this year :hand:

Thanks Steve, I feel your pain! could I ask who set your engine up when you added additional boost? also what fuel regulator did you use?

Yes they are definitely in the Halfords Pro set (highly recommended when on offer BTW)

Don't think Steve has a reg on the SS1 :?: We didn't on the ET Sabre although we have one on the current DET SS1 which is a Sytec

Get your car on the rollers before Curbs and get them to check fueling at full chat...lean is not good :!:

Thanks Steve, the plan is definitely to get it on the rolling road before Curborough as it will need setting up, I was under the impression that in order to increase the boost the fuel pressure would also need to be increased, is this not the case upto a certain amount of boost?

We were running close to 200bhp on the Sabre with no known effects on the engine with no regulator. Can't remember what boost we were running (take a look in my Sabre thread as it might be mentioned)

Steve and myself have used rolling roads in Congleton (Mikeanics) and Middlewich (Revlimit)

The turbo was on about 14.5-15psi. Maxed out for a T2 but it was helped that it was freshly rebuilt by Technics. It's also worth noting the Sabre had an Autosprint cam in it.

The pumps in all the sprint SS1s are standard but new as the originals are tending to fail at this age and increased flow
