The Doctors Coupe - SRE 353G

Post by BigBobPilot » Tue Oct 09, 2018 6:03 pm

Well, my coupe was 1st registered 50 years ago today.

Its odometer is on 116458 (having been round once), so only 2329 miles per year! I've only manged about 1000 miles in my 6 months ownership, so I'm a little off average, bearing in mind it will get less use over the winter.

There was a tastey Rover SD1 Vitesse in the car park last week.

The Honda Prelude must be a daily driver, it's always around.

The Doctors Coupe - SRE 353G

Post by BigBobPilot » Sat Nov 03, 2018 5:34 pm

The nights are starting to get chilly and my coupe didn't have antifreeze in it, as I'd done some flushing & topping up a few times and the heater matrix started leaking (currently by-passed). I know it's needed for anti-corrosion, but I wanted to change a couple of pipes first, and just hadn'tgot round to it.

Although I changed most of the coolant pipes pretty soon after buying the car, there were 2 left to do, the water pump to bottom hose & the water pump to heater valve. With these whipped off, the block & rad were flushed with a hose again. The old pipes were ok really, but it doesn't hurt to have new ones.

Next it was filled up with antifreeze, then off for a spin to mix it all up & check there were no leaks.

I also changed the boot lid seal, as there was a little dampness in the boot. I got a length of seal from Woolies to do the SS1 door seals & the coupe boot. Having done the boot & 1 SS1 door, I'm thinking I've not ordered quite enough though.

I need to do something with the wing mirrors too. The passenger side bezel has looked a bit iffy for a while, but the glass looked like it was about to drop out, so I thought it would be best to remove it.

The coupe isn't really being used at the moment and will be tucked away for the winter. I've got some jobs planned over the winter, going delving in to the heater matrix being one of them.

Have you got 2 anti roll bars on there ?
Also no little switch that pops up the boot when you unlock it,they seem so random as some Coupes have them and some don’t.
Also did you replace the heater hose on the floor with a straight hose or did you make one up with 90dg bends at both ends ?

Yes, doubled up anti roll bars. It was a period mod for a stiffening up the front roll.

The heater hose was replaced with straight silicone hose. Fine at the water pump, a little tight to the rocker cover at the top.

Ben,

As I assume you realise the bottom rad hose is non standard with the ally rad.

I always felt the car handled very well, better than my old white one. Even with the extra roll bar felt pretty balanced.

Hi Nick, yes I know the pipe to the rad is none standard. It was the hard pipe to the back of the water pump that I changed.

Liking the coupe Ben, always really liked that car & discussed a few times with Nick about his long term plans for it. All that being said it appears you're very much making it your own & actually using it! Something which I seem to be unable to do at present....must try harder!

Not sure if the heater matrix is a one off or not but I've had a few (the last one I had made was MGB with 5/8" stubs rather than 1/2") by Motorads in Redditch. They're very good & even have a proper old school trade counter. They can make / repair what you have.

I have to say that all the talk of points, condensers & jets was a bit of a blast from the past! There is something quite nice about them though I guess, at least if something does fail you have a faint chance of getting it going at the roadside.

Is the SS1 totally in the shade now?

Stew.

Hi Stew,

The SS1 is close, I was having a push on it. However, having recently got myself a workshop; I've diverted to fixing the car that the coupe was supposed to replace... My Jag XJR 6 has been sitting with no MOT since the end of May. I was undecided whether to sell it for spares or repairs, or fix it. For some reason I've gone for the fix it route. Steel cars will never catch on though, they do seem to rust. It's in more than one piece at the mo. But once it's back together, the SS1 will go to the workshop and I'll get back on with that & the coupe will get tucked away in my garage, where the SS1 is currently residing.

Thanks for the tip on the heater matrix, I'm going to get it out before deciding what to do, there may be some heater improvements on the cards, along with a few other tweaks to the car, but the SS1 is back to the top of the list once the Jag is sorted.
