It's pretty obvious where the oil was getting passed the rings though :)
Are you sure it's not a case of the rings getting past the oil?

Not quite shiny enough yet but a few more hours and it'll be ready for the car with its new gearbox :)

Almost done. It should be going off to Danny's on Friday for him to bed the cam in, then a few more jobs, MOT and done.

Progress was slow due to lack of enthusiasm, heat and funds. The only thing I had lots of were problems. From the replacement Girling Mk2a servo being faulty and the union threads in the old servo being damaged (due to a PO not knowing the difference between metric and imperial), new custom speedo cable arriving with the wrong end on it, etc etc but it's there now.

Rough list of what's been done:
Engine bay stripped and repainted
Chassis stripped and repainted
Dynamo converted to alternator
Original dynamo regulator removed and wiring loom adapted to suit
Rebuilt Carbs
Rebuilt engine
Rebuilt pedalbox
New clutch master, slave and flexi
New clutch kit
New brake flexis
Refurbished brake MC and servo
Rebuilt water pump
Various wiring repairs
Everything stripped, cleaned, etc etc

So it came back from Danny's and I've sorted all the niggles out. The rebuilt water pump was leaking so that came off and was done again with more attention and fettling some of the seals and springs. The clutch felt a bit low to me so it was adjusted, washer system piped up, cross brace fitted, all lights checked etc.
The speedo cable finally arrived after having to be sent back as it was made wrong and this time it came wrong at the other end. Instead of sending it back again I decided to change the speedo to one with the appropriate drive on it that I'd already restored for the old Coupe.
The tachometer in the car has never worked and when I tried two tachos that I'd converted to negative earth for the old Coupe, they wouldn't play ball either. I hooked them all up to a bench rig and none of them gave a flicker but a spare 5a one did. So my thinking is to fit a Spiyda kit to that, change the face for the correct S6 one and make a replacement plug so it fits into the existing wiring in the car. Sounds simple, no?

In the tacho I'v found it is usually the transistor that blows, and there are modern equivalents available. Also, I converted a negative-earth tacho to a positive-earth so I could fit it in the Sabre Six. If you are handy with a soldering iron I could send you details.
