Well the drivers side that looked absolutely perfect with no distortion, perfectly straight sill.. is actually completely rotten! The sill reinforcement is not quite as bad as the passenger side, and the fibreglass used to hold it in place has remained intact hence the straight sill. The hinge plate is actually worse! So both sides now have an identical hole in the body. Removing the drivers side has revealed a poorly joined replacement to the front section of the chassis side rail and a rusty corner on the roll bar mount, so I’ll sort those out while it’s off too.

Great work Paul and thanks for posting.

Can I ask what cutting implements you used on the various surfaces and joins to get such clean edges? I've recently done the strengthening in the sills of a coupe but cut them out from below using discs on a dremel which works fine, but the next body needs the a pillars doing as well so thought I might try the 'Turnbull method'.

Fein multitool, it’s no exaggeration to say it’s an absolute revelation when cutting GRP, 1mm cut and you can cut a near perfect straight line and even curves with minimal dust.. Unlike the snow storm caused with slitting discs and flap wheels on a grinder

Worth stating that cheaper alternatives are available for us mere DIY types.
Bought a cordless one for about 30 quid (trade) last year and it is a very handy thing indeed.

Oh yes, hats off to you for the leap of faith chopping into the shell like that! A testament to the infinite durability and repairability of GRP. Such a Shane they sandwiched an inferior ferrous material in there!

It’s a bit of a eye opener , many people buy a Scimitar as it doesn’t rust , if a reasonable good car like this is suffering problems then there must be many resto projects and barn finds out there that are hiding far worse secrets .
I have no doubts that once done this will be a stunning car ?

Hence I use Zinc plate in my repair modules, SS is Ok, but have you tried drilling it when sandwiched in GRP :x
And not everyone has a Tig welder or Plasma cutter to shape it.

My thoughts exactly! I obviously saw it coming on the passenger side, but the drivers side was perfect without a hint of distortion anywhere..
