Cheers, it's the 'Lotus Esprit' type I have. Electromagnets would explain the jerkiness.

Yes lotus ones are magnets. I quite like the way they move I find it nicely controllable.

Knowing my luck none of the little steps will be "just right"!

Anyhoo, does the fact that I have wiring for magnets make it any harder or impossible to fit XJS mirrors?

Ref the seat pads.......have a care. After 1980 it was a requirement to have a seat belt fasten warning light (my MOT man tells me). Hence why the GTC has one while the pre 1980 6a doesn't. I don't know if it is still on the MOT list for test as it may have been removed to add something else to the already full list that the computers could not cope with any extras (eg damper check removed in favour of reflective number plate of right dimensions added....so only visual for dampers leak.....gas ones would not show a problem obviously whereas fluid ones would show any leak!!!)
So check that one or you may be in for a MOT failure if both seats not working seat belt lights :x

are you sure it is a requirement from 1980? I have a number of post 1980 vehicles that do not have S/B warning lights.

Not sure it is Dennis my 2002 vw t4 hasn't got one and my 2001 x type only had it on the drivers seat.as for the C it had one but it never worked (doesn't now as the seats have been swapped and the lamp has been removed and replaced with the switch for the mirrors.

It was proposed as an EC type approval/MOT requirement but never adopted. Lots of manufacturers started fitting them though. I'm surprised that anything (that isn't Eastern Bloc :-)) post 2000ish doesn't have them though?

The suggestion that something was dropped from the MOT manual because there wasn't room on the computer is hilarious :-)

The "bump test" was removed because it was subjective - the whole manual is now as objective as possible so there's less room for disparity between testers.

The only mention of a light I can see in the online MOT manual is SRS light which I think may be airbags??? OTOH my tester man said he'd expect the light to work if it's fitted.
Anyhoo my seatbelt light comes on with the ignition, whether driver present or not, goes off when driver closes belt, comes on again if passenger present then off when both belts closed. I think that should be OK.

Been having a look at the rear brakes, all seems good except there's no notch next the pivot in the handbrake lever for the shoe to sit in

although there is for the other shoe. There's a notch in the lever in the parts list drawing and I'm sure the 6a has one. Should I be getting the file out?

SRS is supplemental restraint system (air bags) your seat belt light operation is normal, you don't have a sensor in the drivers seat as it's assumed there is a driver :D

I don't know if they discontinued it later on, but mine has a sensor in both seats and they are wired in such a way that the passenger sensor is only active if the driver is present.

Yes sensor in drivers seat (or at least was.....now fallen out after diaphragm collapse and rear seat passenger footsie work!!) Mine 1980 reg 81. Pretty certain very original as only 52,000 miles when bought from 3rd owner and 2nd owner hardly used it.

1982 GTC project gumtree

Post by ard126k » Sun Aug 06, 2017 6:30 pm

All the work on the undercarriage (bar the hydraulic brakes) is now done and I've taken the car down off its stands. Must be some kind of milestone?

Now starting to think about the body and paint. A dark bronze/copper has taken my fancy, as seen on VWs,Fords,Volvos at the moment. A colour change means clearing out the engine room of course, which is why I haven't put the brake servo back....

Just a couple of wonderings about bodywork. The press-studs for the soft-top feel as if they're screwed into a bar inside the body, but I can't get my hand up far enough to investigate. I don't want to unscrew the studs and not be able to get the bar back in....

I see 7 holes in the lip behind the seats. The parts book shows a rail round there which is bolted through (I think) the soft-top and onto the body. I don't have the rail, and the soft-top looks like the rail was glued inside it at one time. Little chance of finding a rail I suppose so would penny washers do the job? How firmly does the back of the hood need to be secured? Wonder why press-studs weren't good enough?
