OK - that's the sender I suspected it was (fits all GTEs), so one of the terminals in the tubular sections will be the "variable" for the gauge, and one the on/off switch for low fuel level. There might not be a separate spade terminal on the body of the sender unit (or has been painted over :w ), so you might need to make a fresh one - a ring terminal under one of the 6 screws holding the sender unit in will suffice.

For reference, I'd say that was a Scimpart tank based on the octagonal securing ring as I fitted one myself many years ago.

I would get the correct length of Top bolts for the dampers or you will struggle to remove them, if needed, when the body is back on.

Cant remember proper length but the threads should only just show at the nuts.

would I be able to exchange this for a newer voltage regulator ? I already had to re-solder the capacitor back on and it doesn't look too good.

Oooopps

Before the threads go rusty and make it difficult to remove I would just try remove one of the top bolts to check there is enough room to remove them, as it WILL be apita later.

it looks o.k there is plenty of room to get these bolts out, I have a 5 so maybe the body moulding is different.
An update on the car, I ran the engine up nice and hot , the fan came on as it should , heater blowing hot and no leaks , so good news there.
fitted the new seat belts, all bolted through the chassis properly

fitted the ally timing gear on the weekend, didn't want to risk driving to LeMans with the old fibre one, even though it looks to be in excellent condition.

also spent 3 hrs getting the rear lights to work re making earths etc. Now all good although side and brake lights are typical 70's and not very bright.

I do a bulb holder conversion that earths all the bulbs separately.

Fix and forget, until a bulb actually fails

re fitted the roll bar end , which was badly corroded , I had cut a section of body out to get to it before I took the body off the chassis.
I've added another bolt, just took this pic before I had done it.

brakes were a little spongy so I re bled them, I managed to test the overdrive which is working fine. The tick over stays at 1000rpm and the engine is still a bit tappety so will have to do them again. Other than that a very successful first run in 8 years off the road.
